Fans will not be able to watch the Champions League final for free this year

For the first time in over three decades, football supporters in the United Kingdom will be required to pay to watch the Champions League final.

TNT Sports has opted against broadcasting any of the three UEFA European club competition finals on free-to-air television this year, ending a tradition stretching back to the competition's 1992 rebrand from the European Cup.

The decision comes at a particularly significant moment, with English sides competing in all three showpiece events.

Warner Bros Discovery's sports channel has instead chosen to restrict viewing access exclusively to paying subscribers of its HBO Max streaming platform.

Arsenal will face Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on 30 May, seeking to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club's history.

Before that encounter, Aston Villa take on German side Freiburg in the Europa League final this Wednesday, chasing their first major silverware since 1996.

Crystal Palace complete the English trio when they meet Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final seven days after Villa's match.

Victory for the south London club would represent their maiden European honour.

The prospect of Premier League sides claiming all three continental titles has made TNT Sports' paywall decision particularly contentious.

European football's governing body is understood to be deeply unhappy with the broadcaster's approach.

UEFA believes TNT Sports has violated the spirit of its contractual obligations, which stipulate that "best endeavours" should be employed to ensure finals remain freely accessible to viewers.

The friction between UEFA and the rights holder represents an unusual public disagreement over broadcasting arrangements.

While the contract apparently does not mandate free coverage outright, the expectation that broadcasters would make reasonable efforts to maximise viewership for flagship matches has been a longstanding understanding within European football's commercial partnerships.

Those wishing to watch the finals can subscribe to HBO Max from £4.99, whilst a full TNT Sports package costs £31.99 monthly on most platforms.

The arrangement marks a stark departure from previous practice.

When BT Sport held the rights from 2015/16 onwards, both Champions League and Europa League finals were streamed without charge on YouTube.

Prior to that, ITV broadcast finals exclusively from 1992 until 2003, subsequently sharing coverage with Sky Sports until 2015.

TNT Sports' tenure with UEFA competitions will conclude after the 2026-27 season. Paramount secured Champions League rights in last year's auction, whilst Sky Sports won the Europa League and Conference League packages.
