Bodo/Glimt's journey to the last 16 had captured the imagination of football fans across Europe

Sporting Lisbon produced one of the most remarkable comebacks in Champions League history on Tuesday night, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Bodo/Glimt to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

The Portuguese side needed extra time to complete the turnaround, eventually winning 5-0 on the night to progress 5-3 on aggregate.

It was a devastating end to Bodo/Glimt's fairytale European campaign.

The Norwegian underdogs had arrived in Lisbon seemingly in control of the tie.

However, Sporting's formidable home form proved decisive.

They extended their home winning run to 15 matches across all competitions.

Bodo/Glimt's journey to the last 16 had captured the imagination of football fans across Europe.

The club from northern Norway made history by becoming the first team from their nation to reach the knockout stages in their maiden Champions League campaign.

Their route to the last 16 included a stunning play-off victory over Inter Milan, last season's beaten finalists, cementing their status as one of the competition's most compelling stories.

Having secured a commanding 3-0 win in the first leg, the Norwegians appeared well-placed to extend their remarkable run even further.

Yet they knew the return fixture in Portugal would present a far sterner examination.

Sporting set about their task with intensity from the opening whistle, bombarding the Bodo/Glimt goal throughout the first half before Goncalo Inacio broke the deadlock with a header in the 34th minute.

The visitors managed to strike the woodwork through Odin Bjortuft's header from a corner but spent most of the opening period under siege.

Pedro Goncalves then fired into the roof of the net after being set up by Luis Suarez, reducing the aggregate deficit to a single goal.

Suarez himself converted from the spot following a VAR review for handball against Fredrik Bjorkan, levelling the tie.

Nuno Santos struck the post as Sporting pushed for a winner before the break.

The dramatic conclusion came in extra-time when Maxi Araujo drove home in the 92nd minute to put Sporting ahead on aggregate for the first time, before Rafael Nel added a fifth to seal the victory.

Sporting's achievement places them among the elite of European football's premier competition.

Prior to this season's knockout rounds, teams trailing by three or more goals after the first leg had progressed just four times in 51 attempts.

Several Bodo/Glimt players were reduced to tears at the final whistle, though they departed the tournament having exceeded all expectations during their historic debut campaign.
