Sarina Wiegman has opened up on her decision to pick Jess Carter over Esme Morgan for England's Euro 2025 final clash with Spain on Sunday

“The thinking for Italy is that we needed Esme [Morgan] with what we were expecting from Italy," she said.

“Tonight Spain will show some different things to what Italy showed. Tonight we need Jess in the starting line-up.

“It shows, of course, what she can do. She has a very strong personality.

"So, we kept playing football, we kept doing the training sessions, and she kept showing up so she is ready to go tonight.”

Jess Carter comes in for Esme Morgan as England prepare to battle Spain in the final of Euro 2025

England beat Germany in the final of Euro 2022 three years ago.

England haven't been at their brilliant best throughout the competition.

They needed penalties to get the better of Sweden in the last eight, having fallen 2-0 down before a stunning comeback.

Wiegman, speaking on Saturday, admits that it can be nervy at times.

But the Dutchwoman is pleased with the fighting spirit the Lionesses have shown throughout the competition so far.

"I'm having a heart attack too, I just don't show it," she admitted.

"We want to be best prepared. We try to prepare on what can happen in the game and what we need. That is how the squad is built.

"We figured out what we need if need to change things. We have spoken through all the scenarios but during the game it's what you think is necessary.

"When we want to change, we can do it."

She continued: "I think every tournament you want to perform.
