Manchester United boss “embarrassed” by the way his side plays

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim promised “things are going to get better” after admitting he was “embarrassed” with his side’s poor season.

There is no denying that more was expected from Amorim’s side when he took over in November.

The Portuguese finds his side languishing in 16th place in the league, with only Tottenham Hotspur and those in the relegation zone below them.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim admitted: "I am embarrassed that in 26 games, we have won six. Something is wrong with the way we are playing football.

"Everything we have been through, I have a clear picture and a clear feeling of what this team needs to be so much better.

"It is not just on the pitch, it is outside the pitch. We have all the conditions to be better.

“You remember the good stuff, our fans this season, the way they have supported the club, the coach. Things are going to be better.”

Manchester United’s final hope of salvaging something from a disastrous season is via the Europa League, which offers the Red Devils the chance of Champions League football.

The final, which could earn United upwards of £100million, will be played against fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham Hotspur next Wednesday and presents a huge opportunity for both clubs to win some silverware in their respective tumultuous seasons.

Ahead of the clash, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy made the decision to offer tickets to every full-time employee at the club.

Manchester United co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, instead decided to set aside a small number of tickets for a staff ballot, while the remaining staff members have been invited to a screening in Manchester along with two drinks tokens.

This decision, along with many other cost-cutting measures such as significant staff redundancies, has been met with widespread criticism from the United fanbase.

Amorim used the interview to take a sly dig at his employer, saying: “The staff - we changed a lot of people and that is not a good thing.

“Any company [wanting] to improve and to be better, the people must be safe. There is not these feelings here, but we have to address this subject and we have to change it.”

The 40-year-old continued: “The players and the coaches, we have the best conditions to be better and we have a lot of players with experience, of course, when you get these kind of points it's really hard to go up again.

“So, I don’t want my team or especially myself to hide behind these things that are changing in our club but, of course, there’s an influence.”

However, Amorim was quick to explain: “We are Manchester United, and we do not want to be the worst in the league. Our position is unacceptable.”

The importance of the fixture against Spurs cannot be understated for either side.

First, Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Friday evening.

While Manchester United’s league position has gone beyond a concern for many supporters, Chelsea find themselves in a battle for Champions League qualification via the league, with their final two games of utmost importance.

The match could provide preperation for Amorim’s side, who have had one eye on the final since they qualified against Bilbao last week.
