Manchester United stunned Liverpool at Anfield to claim one of their most significant victories in recent memory, a result manager Ruben Amorim hailed as the biggest of his tenure.

The Portuguese coach masterminded a 2-1 win that silenced the home crowd and handed United their first triumph at Anfield in years, breathing new life into their Premier League campaign.

After weeks of scrutiny over United’s inconsistency, Amorim’s side delivered a display of organisation, resilience, and clinical finishing that saw them weather Liverpool’s pressure before striking decisively late on.

Speaking after the match, Amorim described the result as a defining moment since his arrival at Old Trafford. “I think that was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United,” he told Sky Sports. “It means a lot today but tomorrow it won't mean a lot. It’s three points and it’s a good victory.

"We fought for every ball, we lost our composure in the second half but the spirit was there and that is the most important thing. If you have the spirit you can win any game.”

Amorim praised the collective focus that underpinned the performance, particularly United’s defensive structure and use of set-pieces. “We just saw the game and knew how important our set pieces are and the guys that have more experience were on in the beginning,” he said.

“Every time we play in this environment, if you block well in the beginning, you can feel the defence turning. We feel that in our stadium and all the big teams feel that. A good win. It will give us more confidence through the week and pleasure to our fans, they deserve it. This is in the past now, it’s time to look at the future.”

Defender Harry Maguire, who played a commanding role at the back, said the turning point came when United resisted Liverpool’s second-half surge. “Staying in the game when they scored that equaliser,” Maguire told Match of The Day.

“Although they had a lot of pressure and Gakpo hit the post, aside from that I don’t think they made that many chances and we felt pretty comfortable. Then they open us up with a well-worked goal. We could have really sunk our heads and gone under in that moment but we got together, and that is the most pleasing thing.

"The crowd was right behind them, and our fans with what they have experienced in recent years must have been fearing the worst. To come back from that and score the winner was really important.”

Club captain Bruno Fernandes echoed that sentiment, underlining what the victory meant to supporters. “It’s always good to win games. We know what these kind of games mean for our club and our fans,” he said.

“It is a long time since the club won at Anfield. It is very important so I am very happy to do it today. We knew that we had to win our duels. In the first ten minutes they tried to start the game very strong.

"We wanted to slow their game and we knew that would give massive spaces around the middle. In the second half we could have played a little bit more on the ball.

”For Amorim, the message after full-time was clear — enjoy the moment, but move on quickly. “It was a good day,” he said. “Now I am concerned about Brighton.”
