Robin Le Normand and Aurelien Tchouameni clashed heads right at the end of the Madrid derby

Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand has suffered a traumatic brain injury following a head collision in Sunday's La Liga derby against Real Madrid.

The 27-year-old centre-back sustained the injury in the final minutes of the 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano stadium.

Atletico confirmed on Tuesday that Le Normand has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury with subdural haematoma.

The French defender, who won Euro 2024 with Spain in July, collided with Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni whilst contesting a header during second-half stoppage time.

Le Normand received treatment on the pitch before being taken off.

A subdural haematoma occurs when blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain, typically caused by injury.

According to the NHS, it results from blood escaping a damaged blood vessel, forming a clot that pressures the brain.

While often caused by severe head injuries, such as those from car crashes or violent assaults, minor bumps can occasionally lead to subdural haematomas.

The condition usually requires surgery, though some cases may be managed without it.

The severity of Le Normand's injury and the specific treatment plan have not been disclosed by Atletico Madrid at this time.

Atletico Madrid released an official statement regarding Le Normand's condition. The club said:

"Le Normand suffered a heavy blow to the head in the final minutes of the Madrid derby, for which he has undergone a series of tests and an assessment by specialists who have determined that he has suffered a traumatic brain injury with subdural haematoma."

The statement added: "In the process of our player's return to competition, the guidelines set out in the protocol established for this type of trauma will be followed."

This protocol ensures a careful and monitored approach to Le Normand's recovery, prioritising his health and safety before any return to the pitch.

Le Normand's injury will impact Atletico Madrid's upcoming fixtures.

He has been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League match against Benfica in Portugal.
