Real Madrid have apologised after mistakenly using the wrong photo during a memorial video intended to honour Liverpool player Diogo Jota's late brother, Andre Silva.

The Spanish giants showed an image of Elche striker Andre da Silva in an embarrassing mix-up during the club's assembly on Sunday.

The confusion came as the two players share a similar name.

The error occurred during the Ordinary General Assembly of Representative Members, where the club sought to remember those who had passed away in the last year.

Club president Florentino Perez addressed the mistake personally during the event, offering a direct apology to those present.

He said: "There was a mistake in the remembrance of Diogo Jota, and the image of Andre da Silva was shown instead of (Jota's) brother Andre Silva."

"A human error, for which I want to apologise sincerely."

Among those honoured in the video were Leo Beenhakker, Jose Manuel Ochotorena, Mario Vargas Llosa, Giorgio Armani, Pope Francisco and former Barcelona club doctor Carles Minarro.

Real Madrid released an official statement on their social media channels expressing their regret over the incident.

The statement read: "Real Madrid C. F. apologises to Elche C. F. and its player Andre da Silva for having mistakenly included, in the obituary of an institutional video, his image instead of that of André Silva, brother of Diogo Jota, Liverpool player.

"We regret what happened."

The timing of the error proved particularly awkward as Real Madrid are scheduled to face Elche at the Martinez Valero stadium later today.

Real Madrid had previously demonstrated their respect when the two clubs met in November's Champions League fixture, placing floral tributes and messages at the stadium.

After qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with Scotland, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson was overcome with emotion talking about his “mate” Diogo Jota.

Robertson dedicated helping his side qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998 to Jota.

The left-back also expressed his sorrow at the death of his fellow 2025 Premier League winner just moments before kick-off.
