Cheshire's affluent 'Golden Triangle' has become a prime target for international criminal networks

Everton defender Jake O'Brien has purchased a protection dog to safeguard his family amid growing security concerns among Premier League footballers.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international purchased Knox, a black German Shepherd, from specialist firm Chaperone K9 following recommendations from fellow players.

The centre-back's decision aims to ensure the safety of his girlfriend, Sophie Lawlor, and their infant son, Greyson, while he fulfils his football commitments.

O'Brien emphasised that maintaining family security during his absences remains his primary concern.

The defender described the canine as an optimal security solution, highlighting the animal's loyalty and protective instincts as crucial factors in his purchase decision.

The acquisition follows numerous high-profile burglaries targeting Premier League players, including O'Brien's current Everton colleague Jack Grealish.

Grealish suffered a devastating break-in at his £5.6million Cheshire residence in December 2023, with criminals stealing jewellery valued at £1million.

The robbery occurred whilst the England international was representing Manchester City, ironically against Everton, on Boxing Day.

The incident left his partner, reality television personality Sasha Attwood, deeply shaken and concerned for her safety.

Grealish later expressed his distress on social media, where he wrote: "This has been a traumatic experience for all of us, I am just so grateful that nobody was hurt."

The security threats extend beyond isolated incidents, with numerous elite footballers falling victim to organised criminals.

Kevin De Bruyne and Kurt Zouma have experienced similar ordeals, particularly during the 2023 Qatar World Cup period.

Former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof and his family endured a terrifying home invasion in January 2022 while the Swedish international was playing against Brentford.

The family managed to secure themselves in a locked room before the intruders gained entry.

Cheshire's affluent 'Golden Triangle' has become a prime target for international criminal networks, with authorities identifying up to 500 burglars from Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Peru entering Britain annually to target luxury properties.

Explaining the reason behind his decision, O'Brien said: "I think as a high-profile person, security is very important. Not just for you but for your family, knowing that if I'm away for whatever reason, my family are safe at home."

The defender acknowledged that footballers face heightened burglary risks due to their public profiles and social media presence.

He also noted that predictable match schedules make players particularly vulnerable targets.

O'Brien said: "Having Knox gives us that extra security in the house as well as being a very friendly pet when having to be on guard."

He added that he considers trained protection dogs the most effective security measure available.
