Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle
Nick Woltemade’s own goal earned Sunderland the Wear-Tyne derby spoils with a 1-0 win over Newcastle.
After a physical first half provided few real chances for either side, the hosts went ahead one minute after the break when Woltemade inexplicably sent a header flying into his own net off the underside of the crossbar from Nordi Mukiele’s cross.
Although the previous match between the sides, an FA Cup tie in January 2024, ended in a 3-0 Newcastle win, Sunday’s victory extended the Black Cats’ unbeaten Wear-Tyne derby run in the league to 10 games.
It lifted them up to seventh in the table, with Newcastle back into 12th.
There was a minute’s applause before kick-off for Sunderland cult hero Gary Rowell, who died on Saturday following a battle with leukaemia.
The Black Cats made three changes from the defeat to Manchester City, with Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey coming in, while Anthony Elanga and Lewis Miley were the two Newcastle changes from the midweek Champions League draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
Sunderland controlled the opening stages, with Newcastle forced to clear crosses into the box from Mukiele, Enzo Le Fee and Reinildo, while Robin Roefs made a comfortable claim from Woltemade’s through-ball at the opposite end.
A teasing cross from Bertrand Traore was poked just wide by Malick Thiaw for Sunderland and Elanga had a hooked attempt easily held by Roefs.
The game evolved into a physical contest and Newcastle tested the home defence when Mukiele nodded away Bruno Guimaraes’ deep free-kick and Anthony Gordon’s cross was cleared.
Eddie Howe was forced to make an early change in the 42nd minute with Dan Burn unable to continue following a heavy challenge from Mukiele only moments earlier and Fabian Schar was brought on.
With neither side having a clear-cut chance during the first half, Dan Ballard had the first real opportunity on the stroke of half-time, heading over the crossbar from Granit Xhaka’s cross.
But Sunderland took the lead a minute into the second period when Woltemade met Mukiele’s curling cross, but instead of producing a clearing header, he only succeeded in diverting the ball powerfully into his own net.
In the following minutes, Newcastle were forced to clear a barrage of crosses from the left flank as the Black Cats looked to quickly capitalise on their momentum.
Howe made a triple substitution, with Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock introduced, and Guimaraes looked to level, weaving around the box before unleashing a shot held by Roefs.
The Sunderland goalkeeper made another stop from the Newcastle skipper’s curling effort.
Trai Hume and Wilson Isidor came on for the hosts and Isidor soon had his first opportunity, latching on to Omar Alderete’s ball and forcing a great save from Aaron Ramsdale at the near post.
Ballard cleared a looping pass intended for Barnes and substitute Yoane Wissa was nearly played through when Murphy’s cross took a deflection, but Roefs was equal to it.
A chaotic four minutes of stoppage time saw referee Peter Bankes dish out several yellow cards as tensions spilt over between the two teams, but Sunderland saw out the game to secure the north-east bragging rights.

Crystal Palace 0-3 Manchester City
Manchester City moved back to within two points of the Premier League summit with an impressive 3-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Goals in each half from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden then a late Haaland penalty ensured City got their fourth league victory in a row to keep the pressure on leaders Arsenal, and it was a guileful, gutsy display that was needed to see off a Palace team who had sights on the top four.
Oliver Glasner could reflect on poor finishing from his side who had multiple opportunities to hurt the visitors whilst the game was goalless. In the end it was the difference, with two unerring executions from two players in wonderful form ultimately settling the bout in favour of Pep Guardiola’s team.
Palace’s best opening came early. Yeremy Pino kept himself onside by a gnat’s wing, took the ball down sweetly on his chest then taking the chance early lofted a half-volley that beat Gianluigi Donnarumma but struck the top of the crossbar.
Pino was Palace’s liveliest operator, hassling Nico Gonzalez off the ball then charging through the City defence who made hard work of wrestling him to a halt. Daichi Kamada too was enjoying success breaking through the midfield, releasing Ismailia Sarr down the right whose lovely cross just evaded Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Dean Henderson beat away a Foden free-kick at his near post as City finally threatened after plenty of meandering possession. It would be a warning of what was to come and in the 41st minute they led.
Matheus Nunes took up the ball on the right and sent over a big, reaching cross. Chris Richards leapt but it sailed over him, and there hanging in the air behind him was Haaland, rising high and powering a header down into the ground and past Henderson.
There was time before the break for a penalty shout from Palace when Mateta toppled over Donnarumma as the pair went for the ball. Replays suggested City’s goalkeeper got a foot to the ball before Mateta went down.
Gonzalez was struggling with Palace’s physical midfield. He lost the ball again just after half-time to Adam Wharton who cracked a low drive against the base of the post.
Henderson saved with his boot from Tijjani Reijnders’ shot after he was slipped in down the right by Rayan Cherki.
City’s France international would make a defining contribution in the 69th minute. It was his powerful run, bursting beyond three Palace players and slipping the ball off, that opened up space. He moved it to his right to Foden, who took a touch with his left and drilled expertly into the bottom corner beyond the reach of Henderson.
Palace poured players forward and put City under considerable pressure in search of a way back. That left them exposed on the break, and moments after coming on Savinho wasted no time in making an impact, streaking away on the break and being pulled down by Henderson.
From the spot, Haaland found the corner to make it three, a margin that in truth neither team deserved.

West Ham 2-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa remain firmly in the Premier League title chase as Morgan Rogers scored a brace in a 3-2 comeback win at West Ham.
Villa fell behind twice, to Mateus Fernandes’ goal after just 29 seconds and a poacher’s strike from Jarrod Bowen.
But a Konstantinos Mavropanos own-goal cancelled out the opener and Rogers hauled Villa level at 2-2, before the England midfielder capped a sparkling performance with a stunning 25-yarder.
A 10th victory from 11 matches – Villa’s best run in more than a century – keeps them three points behind leaders Arsenal, while West Ham remain stuck in the relegation zone.
Before kick-off, the hosts paid an emotional tribute to their former captain, manager and record-appearance holder Billy Bonds, who died two weeks ago.
Ex-Hammers team-mates, including Sir Trevor Brooking and Alvin Martin, were on the pitch while, in front of the stand named after Bonds hung an image of him lifting the FA Cup.
This was a fitting fixture, evoking memories of a First Division match at Upton Park in April 1983 when Bonds was fouled by Peter Withe and leapt up to confront the uncompromising Villa striker.
But instead of lashing out, Bonds – having seen referee Clive Thomas approaching – diffused the situation by grabbing Withe’s hands and proceeding to dance with him.
Both avoided a booking and Bonds had the last laugh when his goal wrapped up a 2-0 West Ham win.
Sadly for the hosts, this time it was Villa who waltzed away with the points, despite the Hammers getting off to a dream start.
Ezri Konsa dawdled on the ball near the byline and was robbed by Fernandes, who swept an angled shot past stand-in Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot and into the roof of the net.
It was the quickest goal of the Premier League season so far, surpassing Hugo Ekitike’s opener for Liverpool, 24 hours earlier.
However, Villa hauled themselves level after nine minutes when Mavropanos, challenging Ollie Watkins for John McGinn’s cross, inadvertently headed into his own net.
West Ham retook the lead in the 24th minute when Bowen, being played onside by Konsa, stuck out a foot to divert a Freddie Potts shot home.
Five minutes after half-time, Villa equalised again after a mistake by Lucas Paqueta, who was actually having one of his more influential games.
However, when the Brazil international needlessly gave the ball away inside his own half, Youri Tielemans charged forward and crossed for Rogers, who had time to take a touch, turn and slam the ball into the net before a West Ham player got near him.
Bowen had the ball in the net again but it was ruled out for a tight offside before, with 11 minutes left, Rogers unleashed a swerving, dipping effort into the top corner to stun West Ham.

Nottingham Forest 3-0 Tottenham
Tottenham suffered a dismal 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, with Spurs' goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario having an afternoon to forget.
Vicario was twice culpable as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s double put Forest on the way to a big three points at the City Ground, first playing his team-mate Archie Gray into trouble at the back and then getting caught out by an overhit cross.
The forlorn Italian could not do anything to keep out Ibrahim Sangare’s wonder goal as Spurs endured a desperate afternoon by the Trent.
The clouds had appeared to be lifting after a draw at Newcastle and wins over Brentford and Slavia Prague but this was as bad as it has been under new boss Thomas Frank, who now comes under fresh scrutiny.
They were ragged, outfought, outthought and managed just one shot on target as the 3-0 scoreline flattered them.
In contrast, this was one of Forest’s best displays under boss Sean Dyche and they moved six points clear of the bottom three.
The hosts set the tone from the start and were denied by the woodwork in the fifth minute.
Sangare, playing his last game before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, arrived perfectly to meet Nicolo Savona’s cross but his header hit the base of the post.
Igor Jesus’ follow-up shot was blocked and then Neco Williams’ shot was ex parried by Vicario as the goalkeeper produced a rare highlight.
Nikola Milenkovic then flashed a header from Williams’ cross just wide as Forest continued to push.
The lead eventually arrived in the 28th minute as Christmas came early with Spurs making a fatal mistake playing out from the back.
Vicario put Gray under pressure and Sangare stole possession on the edge of the area and then recovered from a heavy touch to tee up Hudson-Odoi to slide home from close range.
Spurs briefly pushed for an instant response as Gray’s fizzed shot was saved well by John Victor in what was their only effort on target, but Forest remained dangerous.
Morgan Gibbs-White was inches away from converting a wicked Jesus cross and then the England international’s attempted backheel was diverted wide by Rodrigo Bentancur.
Forest did get their second five minutes after the restart and questions will again be asked of Vicario.
Hudson-Odoi’s trickery on the left created space for himself and then his overhit cross sailed over the Italian goalkeeper and into the far corner.
Forest smelled blood and pushed for a third with the impressive Jesus drilling just wide from a quick break and then Omari Hutchinson also missing the target from distance.
Spurs were a complete mess and Forest deservedly made it 3-0 in the 79th minute in some style.
Sangare scored the goal of the game as he gave Vicario no chance from a first-time effort with the outside of his boot, which went in off the post.

Leeds United rescued a point in their 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium this afternoon, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin continuing his remarkable scoring streak by netting for the fourth successive Premier League fixture.
The striker rose to meet Wilfried Gnonto's delivery in the 82nd minute, planting a header beyond Caoimhin Kelleher to cancel out Jordan Henderson's earlier effort.
Henderson had broken the deadlock in the 70th minute with his maiden goal for the Bees, converting Rico Henry's cutback with a strike that deflected off Jaka Bijol.
The result lifts Leeds three points above the drop zone and extends their unbeaten sequence to three matches.
Daniel Farke's side have transformed their fortunes following a dire run of six losses in seven outings, claiming victory over Chelsea before snatching a dramatic 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Elland Road on December 6, with Ao Tanaka scoring a 96th-minute equaliser.
Henderson's goal marked a notable personal milestone, making the 35-year-old the oldest player to score for Brentford in the Premier League.
The former Liverpool midfielder had not found the net in the top flight since December 2021, when he scored against Everton.
Keith Andrews' hosts remain 14th in the table despite their strong home record this campaign.
