ANALYSIS: Sports reporter Ben McCaffrey shares his thoughts on the day's 3pm kick-offs

The 3pm Premier League kick-offs did not provide box office entertainment, but saw crucial three points for Newcastle, Fulham and Bournemouth.

Newcastle's new record signing, Nick Woltemade, got his Magpies career off to a flyer by grabbing a goal on his debut for the club.

The feeling was not shared by Leeds new man Gabriel Gudmundsson, who saw his header fly into the back of his own net in comical fashion, condemning the newly-promoted side to their second defeat of the season.

With that being said, here is a round-up of all the action this afternoon.

Newcastle 1-0 Wolves

Eddie Howe’s side recorded their first victory of the season against a Wolves team that broke an unwanted record of losing the first four games of a Premier League campaign for the first time in their history.

But it was Woltemade who stole the headlines, with the £69million man heading home on his debut to secure the three points. Getting off to a good start is pivotal, and the German will be brimming with confidence. Using all of his 6 ft 6 in frame, Woltemade nicking the winner from close range after a fabulous Jacob Murphy delivery.

It spells further trouble for Wolves, however. Vitor Pereira’s side have started the season woefully, and newly promoted teams such as Leeds and Sunderland have began positively, picking up crucial points already. There’s a lot of work to be done.

Newcastle, on the other hand, will be delighted. The Alexander Isak saga can be put firmly behind them, with Woltemade opening his account. Howe’s focus can be solely on moving forward with his team which, in the end, made some very tidy additions in the summer window.

Bournemouth 2-1 Brighton

Bournemouth

At the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth continued their storming start to the season by recording their third win in four Premier League matches.

Former Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott opened the scoring with a superb long range strike into the bottom corner of Bart Verbruggen’s net.

Japanese maestro Kauro Mitoma popped up with an unlikely header at the back post after a terrific delivery from Yankuba Minteh, only to be cancelled out as Antoine Semenyo bagged his third of the campaign from the spot.

It’s far from panic stations for Brighton, despite a somewhat underwhelming start to the season; their only victory so far came against Manchester City.

Bournemouth, on the other hand, continue to prove their doubters wrong. After a summer exodus that saw the likes of Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez leave the club, Andoni Iraola’s side looks just as strong at the back while carrying a constant goal threat.

Everton 0-0 Aston Villa

The Hill Dickinson Stadium saw the first of two goalless draws at the 3pm kick-offs today.

Both sides will undoubtedly be content to take a point. A tough away test for Unai Emery’s side, and another point to add on to a positive beginning to the season for Everton that sees them sixth in the table at this early stage.

The major talking point will be Aston Villa’s failure to get on the scoresheet for the fourth consecutive game - they are yet to grab a goal this season. Deadline day additions of Harvey Elliott and Victor Lindelof came off the bench but could not break the duck.

Everton, fresh off the back of congratulating loan star Jack Grealish on his Player of the Month award, have had a strong start to life in their new stadium. Three games, two victories and no goals conceded will certainly please David Moyes moving forward.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Sunderland

Marc Guehi

Sunderland continued their brilliant return to the Premier League by picking up a respectable point at Selhurst Park.

Oliver Glasner’s side managed to keep hold of their skipper, Marc Guehi, who played a major role in keeping the clean sheet today.

Regis Le Bris will be delighted at yet another point on the board - they have lost just once in the league this season so far. The Black Cats find themselves fifth in the league, which accurately depicts how impressive they have been.

The draw marks Palace’s third in four games. Similar to Newcastle, they are now able to put the transfer sagas of Guehi and Eberechi Eze behind them and focus on their upcoming maiden European campaign.

Fulham 1-0 Leeds United

Leeds Fulham

Gabriel Gudmundsson scored an unfortunate own goal that decided the game

Craven Cottage saw a game that lacked quality and was ultimately decided through a comical own goal from the visitors.

An impressive first-half performance from Leeds, but the away team drifted in the second period with Marko Silva’s side heaping the pressure on towards the final minutes.

But it wasn’t the pressure that told. A whipped corner delivery from Sasa Lukic hit the head of full-back Gabriel Gudmundsson, who saw the ball fly into the corner of his own net.

The goal came just moments from time, and marks a cruel awakening to Premier League football for Leeds. There remains positive for the newly-promoted side, who certainly held their own throughout the match despite falling short. Daniel Farke’s side are still searching for their first goal from open play, however.

Fulham ended their streak of conceding a penalty in five consecutive games to record their first victory of the league season. New signing Kevin also made his debut and impressed for the hosts.
