The 24-year-old was arrested last week but the allegations have since been dropped

The Metropolitan Police have dropped their investigation into a rape allegation against a former Premier League footballer.

The 24-year-old player, who has not been named, was arrested last Wednesday at the Corinthia Hotel in Westminster, London, following claims made by a woman in her 20s.

Initially held at Charing Cross police station and bailed until mid-December, the footballer has now been informed that no further action will be taken in the case.

The alleged incident took place on Tuesday night when the woman reportedly met the footballer at a central London bar.

She agreed to return to his hotel room, where the alleged attack occurred.

The following morning, the woman alerted hotel staff at the front desk, claiming she had been raped.

Police were called to the scene at 9:53 am on Wednesday.

The footballer was arrested at the hotel, much to the surprise of guests and staff. He denied the allegation.
