Pep Guardiola names England's next goalkeeper to take Jordan Pickford's mantle

The young goalkeeper has made just four appearances this season after beginning the campaign as City's starting keeper.

Guardiola's endorsement represents significant backing for a player who has yet to earn his first senior England cap.

Trafford began the current campaign as City's preferred goalkeeper, featuring in the club's first three Premier League fixtures.

His position changed dramatically when Italian international Donnarumma joined from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The former Burnley keeper, who returned to Manchester in a deal potentially worth £31 million, has since found himself relegated to substitute duties. Donnarumma has maintained five clean sheets since his arrival, establishing himself as Guardiola's primary choice between the posts.

Despite this shift in hierarchy, Trafford has continued to receive opportunities in cup competitions, including City's third-round Carabao Cup victory at Huddersfield Town.

Guardiola praised Trafford's professional attitude during his reduced playing time, emphasising his satisfaction with the goalkeeper's conduct. "All I can say is we are delighted with his behaviour in training," the City manager revealed during Tuesday's pre-match conference.

The Spanish coach highlighted the unique dynamics between his two keepers, suggesting both benefit from their partnership.

"I'm pretty sure Gigi learns from James and James learns from Gigi," Guardiola explained, adding that "goalkeepers are always connected."

Guardiola also stressed his determination to progress in the Carabao Cup, viewing it as crucial for maintaining squad readiness.

"One of the reasons why we want to go through in this competition is because they all have to be ready in case we need them in the Premier League and the Champions League," he stated.

Trafford's international pedigree includes a pivotal role in England Under-21s' European Championship triumph in 2023, where he maintained an unblemished defensive record throughout the tournament.

His performances at youth level have earned recognition from senior management, with Thomas Tuchel including him in every England squad since taking charge.

The goalkeeper is anticipated to return between the posts for Wednesday evening's Carabao Cup clash with Championship side Swansea City at 19:45 GMT.

This fixture offers another opportunity for Trafford to demonstrate his capabilities, having accumulated 360 minutes of playing time this season.

His previous campaign saw him excel at Burnley, where he recorded 29 clean sheets during their successful Championship promotion campaign.
