The Portuguese guided the club to a seventh-place finish last year

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is said to be “considering sacking” boss Nuno Espírito Santo after tensions have risen over transfer activity in recent weeks, with the Greek reportedly already lining up a surprise replacement.

Forest shocked viewers last season, as they stormed to a seventh-place finish and secured European football despite being tipped for relegation.

Espírito Santo deployed counter-attacking tactics to devastating effect, with Nikola Milenkovic sweeping up at the back, Morgan Gibbs-White their midfield creator and Chris Wood ruthless in front of goal.

The future looked bright for the club going into the window, although winger Anthony Elanga was pinched from them by Newcastle early on.

However, sports journalist Matteo Moretto, who boasts 420,000 social media followers, including Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, has claimed the club are sensationally considering replacing Espírito Santo after rising tensions between the coach and the owner.

Moretto also suggested the Reds are lining up former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou as his replacement, should the Portuguese leave.

The Australian was recently sacked as Tottenham boss after stuttering to a woeful 17th in the league.

Postecoglou's CV does showcase a winning record, however, guiding Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years and won a domestic treble with Celtic. He also boasts an exciting but risky style of play that could intrigue Marinakis and would provide a stark contrast to Espirito Santo's more conservative tactics.

Espirito Santo's Forest beat Postecoglou's Spurs on both occasions that the two teams met in the Premier League last year.

Moretto took to X to share the news, writing: “Nottingham Forest is considering sacking Nuno Espírito Santo.

“Tensions between the ownership and the Portuguese coach, also stemming from certain signings during this transfer window.

“The English club is already evaluating other coaches.”

He later added: “One of the names that Nottingham Forest is considering is Ange Postecoglou.”

Tensions boiled over when discussing his side ahead of the Premier League season, with Espírito Santo blasting the lack of planning throughout the summer.

He said: "We are very far - very, very far - from where we should be. We are very far in terms of preparation, in terms of planning, in terms of the squad.

"So we are all very worried that in two or three days' time we are playing for the Premier League, the most demanding competition in the world. And we are very far. Very, very far.

"The plans that we had didn't come through. The preparation in terms of the squad was not ideal.

"We didn't have a chance to create the bond - and this is what I think is more important.

"Because we don't know which squad we have. We have players working here who know they're going to leave on loan. We have a major problem."

Despite this, Forest won their opening game of the season in a convincing 3-1 victory over Brentford at the Forest Ground.

Moreover, the club have added Omari Hutchinson, Arnaud Kalimuendo, James McAtee and Douglas Luiz since then, taking their summer spending over £150million.

The incomings suggest the relationship could have been fixed.

It is not the first time the pair have come to high-profile blows. In their 2-2 draw against Leicester City towards the end of the last campaign, Marinakis entered the pitch after the full-time whistle and appeared to berate the Forest boss.

The club later confirmed this was not the case, with the Greek owner said to have been concerned about the well-being of striker Taiwo Awoniyi, after he collided with the post.
