Nottingham Forest have reportedly launched an internal investigation into their medical team's handling of Taiwo Awoniyi's horror injury.

The Nigerian striker suffered severe abdominal injuries during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Leicester City after colliding with a post.

The club's owner Evangelos Marinakis is said to be furious that the 27-year-old was allowed to continue playing despite the serious nature of his injury, according to The Sun.

Awoniyi remains in hospital in an induced coma following surgery on Monday to repair a ruptured intestine.

Surgeons made the decision to place him in an induced coma to stabilise his condition.

This medical intervention will help restrict his movement and regulate his heart rate while he recovers from the serious abdominal injuries.

The severity of the situation has prompted immediate action from the club's hierarchy.

Marinakis was so incensed by the situation that he raced onto the pitch at full-time to question manager Nuno Espirito Santo directly.

The Greek tycoon has now ordered a comprehensive internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the controversial decision to allow Awoniyi to play on.

Forest's owner is demanding answers before deciding if any further action is required against those responsible.

Forest's vastly experienced club doctor Dr Prithish Shyam Narayan will be among those questioned during the investigation.

Club medics and coaches will also be interviewed as part of the process.

The investigation aims to establish a precise picture and understanding of what happened during Sunday's match.

The club is determined to uncover how and why the decision was made to allow Awoniyi to continue playing after such a serious collision.

In a hard-hitting statement issued on Monday, Forest made it clear they will not tolerate any player being endangered.

"The seriousness of Taiwo Awoniyi's injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player's health and well-being must always come first," the statement read.

The club appeared to criticise their own medical team, stating: "There was only shared frustration between all of us that the medical team should never have allowed the player to continue."

The statement further emphasised that player safety is "not just policy for us, it is the deeply held conviction of our owner."

This incident has raised serious questions about pitch-side medical protocols at the club.

Forest's investigation comes amid growing concern throughout football about how injuries are assessed during matches.

The club has not provided a timeline for when the investigation will conclude or when further updates on Awoniyi's condition will be released.

With two matches left to play, Forest remain in the hunt for Champions League football.

They will do battle with West Ham on May 18 before concluding their campaign with a crunch clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

The Blues are also in the hunt for Champions League football, making that showdown all the more intriguing.
