Nottingham Forest cruised to victory over Brentford in a 3-1 win at the City Ground

Nottingham Forest had a stunning season last campaign and that form appears to have carried over into the new term with a 3-1 win over Brentford on Sunday.

There has been much controversy over their elevation to the Europa League this season with Crystal Palace dropping out due to rules over owners with multiple clubs.

Nevertheless, Forest appear to mean business and their key players are still flying - principally Chris Wood, who scored 20 goals last season in the Premier League.

He already has two this season, having netted twice against Brentford with new signing Dan Ndoye also getting in on the act.

Igor Thiago, who missed most of last season through injury, grabbed a consolation goal for the Bees from the penalty spot - but have we learned anything new from these two sides? GB News finds out.

Keeping Morgan Gibbs-White was crucial

Losing Anthony Elanga was a concern for Forest, particularly when Morgan Gibbs-White looked set to join Tottenham Hotspur.

But with the 25-year-old talisman remaining at the club and Forest making some astute signings - James McAtee and Omari Hutchinson were unveiled to the crowd ahead of the game this afternoon, while new arrival Ndoye netted a stunning header on the day - the club can remain positive.

They continued their momentum in the window to the pitch, by dismantling Brentford 3-0 at the Forest Ground.

Wood was back amongst the goals, Gibbs-White was gliding past players and teed up Ndoye for his brilliant goal, defensively they were solid and did not look threatened.

It was about as good as Forest fans could have been hoping for, and with more additions to step foot on the pitch, the season looks bright.

Brentford might be in trouble

While positivity engulfed the Forest Ground on Sunday, the opposite can be said for Brentford.

The Bees enter the season having lost their influential boss Thomas Frank to Spurs, star forward Bryan Mbuemo to Manchester United and top scorer Yoanna Wissa kicking up a fuss to get a move to Newcastle - the mood is pretty low.

New boss Keith Andrews, who has taken his first job in management, has spoken very well so far, but he would not have been happy with the way they rolled over this afternoon.

There won’t be any panic, but the fear is that if there aren’t improvements fast, the pre-season pessimism could grow, fast.

They did break their transfer record to bring in Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth in a £42million deal. The move weakens a Premier League rival and strengthens the Bees - but didn’t get a sniff today so Andrews will be looking to get him involved as soon as possible.

Chris Wood remains strong as ever

In 2023, Wood's career appeared to be at a crossroads after a less-than successful loan at Forest following a mediocre stint at Newcastle where he scored four times in 34 league matches.

Forest were forced into a permanent deal after certain conditions were met - joining for a reported fee of £15million and there were already rumours that he could be allowed to leave.

But he proved his worth - and more - when he scored an astonishing 20 times last season as Forest ended up qualifying for the Europa League.

Now aged 33, Wood remains as strong as ever and already has two Premier League goals to his name this season after his double against Brentford.
