The Magpies had been aiming to bounce back after losing their last two league games

Newcastle United have beaten Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, with winger Harvey Barnes netting a brace to lift the Magpies five points off the top four positions.

The win also marked Eddie Howe's first Premier League win over Manchester City, having won none of his 18 previous meetings.

But the Toon didn't let history get in the way as they took the game to the Premier League giants.

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias found the net as they looked to get back into the game and chase Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

The Magpies had been aiming to bounce back after losing their last two league games, away to West Ham and Brentford, before the International break.

Newcastle have had the worst start to a top-flight season under Eddie Howe.

Though Man City lost two of their first three league games this season, they’ve since lost one of the next eight while conceding just four goals.

Pep Guardiola’s side split for the international break after a big win against reigning champions Liverpool and another three points today would have taken them within one of table-topping Arsenal.

Now they have given Arsenal some vital breathing room as the Gunners are to host the north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

GB News now takes a look at some key points from the game.

Harvey Barnes: The unlikley hero

Newcastle are currently without goal threat Anthony Gordon and are patiently awaiting injured forward Yoane Wissa to make his club debut after signing in the summer.

Nick Woltemade has proven to be a valuable goal threat for the Geordies after they lost star striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool hours before the window closed.

Harvey Barnes has risen to the occasion, becoming the unlikely hero of the fixture.

A second-half brace was enough to secure the three points despite Ruben Dias' equaliser.

Missed chances cost Manchester City

At half-time, the game remained level.

But before the break, Haaland and Foden both missed gilt-edged chances, which ultimately cost Guardiola's side.

The Norwegian goal-scoring machine failed to capitalise on an excellent counter-attacking chance.

The Manchester City star was through on goal with only Nick Pope to beat, but scuffed an attempted chip.

Foden missed his chance from close range, keeping the score-line level.

Woltemade and Barnes did miss a chance of their own, but that's the beauty of football.

VAR, VAR and VAR again!

The Video Assistant Referee was called upon twice during the fixture.

Ultimately, it was decided that two penalty calls were not sufficient to award.

The first, Foden claimed a late Schar challenge caught him in the area moments before releasing his shot.

The referee initially signalled that play should continue, but the dreaded VAR stepped in to review.

After a few anxious moments, no penalty was awarded against Newcastle's Swiss defender.

Manchester City also had a second claim shortly after.

Doku blasted the ball straight at Thiaw's arm in the box.

The ball made contact, but VAR quickly concluded that there was no way the big defender could have avoided it.

City still have a hand on the Premier League trophy

Manchester City's loss means they drop down to third, three points behind Arsenal, having played a game more.

The Gunners are still to play on Sunday in the much-anticipated north London derby.

However, City aren't out of the race.

Tottenham will prove a tough challenge for Mikel Arteta's side, especially after their slip-up against Sunderland.

City still has Guardiola, which might prove to be enough.

Liverpool look out of the race and Chelsea would have to shock the footballing world to top the table come the end of the season.

This head-to-head still hangs in the balance.
