The Slovenian has given the green light on a move to St. James' Park

Newcastle have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with the Tyneside club improving their bid after they saw their initial £70million rejected last week.

Eddie Howe’s side have been in direct competition with Manchester United for the Slovenian striker’s signature, but the Red Devils are yet to table a formal bid.

Amorim's side had been waiting for a decision from Sesko as to who he would prefer to join before making an offer, although they had informed the Bundesliga club of their intention to do so should he choose them.

However in the latest twist, the 22-year-old is said to have told both clubs he would be open to joining them, causing Newcastle to act fast and make an improved offer.

It was thought last week that Sesko, who scored 13 Bundesliga goals last term, favoured a move to Old Trafford but has now confirmed he would be open to both clubs.

The latest development means Isak, who returned to Newcastle on Saturday after training alone at his former club Real Sociedad, could be allowed to move to Anfield.

The Reds saw a £110m bid rejected for the Swede last week and insisted they would only return to the table with an improved offer should Newcastle secure his replacement.

With Leipzig and Newcastle nearing an agreement and the striker giving the green light on the deal, the door could be open for Isak to move to Anfield.

Liverpool sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65m last week, and Darwin Nunez has been made Al Hilal’s top target. The Saudi club are expected to bid in the region of £60m for the Uruguayan.

The sales, which would total over £125m between them, would help Liverpool bridge the gap in valuation between the two sides for Isak, currently standing at around £40m.

The latest development could indicate the end is around the corner for the transfer saga that has plagued Howe throughout the summer.

Newcastle had been in the market to bolster their attacking options with Hugo Ekitike, but he decided to join Liverpool.

Following Ekitike’s arrival, Arne Slot’s side turned their attentions to Isak, who made it clear that he was intent on a move to Anfield.

The Magpies have struggled for additions all over the pitch, seeing their top goalkeeper target James Trafford move back to Manchester City instead.

Howe is also looking to bolster his options in the centre of the park, considering they lost Sean Longstaff to Leeds United earlier in the window.

After qualifying for the Champions League for the second time during his Newcastle career, the Toon boss needs to increase the depth of his squad.

With Isak and Sesko both seemingly on the move, Howe will be hoping to put this saga behind him and focus on rebuilding his Newcastle side ahead of a crucial campaign.
