Mary Earps has followed up her Sports Personality of the Year award by being included on the New Years Honours list.

Mary Earps' inclusion on the New Years Honours list hasn't sat well with some social media users.

The Manchester United and England women's goalkeeper was named BBC's Sports Personality of the Year earlier this month, beating Stuart Broad and Katarina Johnson-Thompson to the award.

And she's now followed that up by being one of three England women stars to feature on the New Years Honours list.

Earps is joined by Lauren Hemp in being recognised as an MBE while compatriot Millie Bright has been appointed an OBE.

Broad, Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow are among the other sports stars named on the honours list.

But it was Earps' inclusion that appeared to frustrate some users on social media.

One person wrote: "Mary earps.. Honoured! Yes honoured for saving the worse penalty back pass travelling at 5mph. Then let in 2 goals lost and won nothing. Well done woke Britain"

Another furiously posted: "Pathetic woke c*** your not worthy."

A third simply said: "Mary Earps? Are you f***ing joking?"

Another vented: "Mary Earps getting an MBE is ridiculous."

One other user asked: "Hero? She lost."

Another wrote: "Why Mary Earps and just two other #Lionesses? In fact why any of them, they won nothing, it’s a complete farce."

Earps helped the Lionesses on their way to England's first World Cup final since the men's side won the tournament in 1966.

She ended up fifth on the Ballon d'Or voting for 2023 - the highest for a goalkeeper on the women's side.

The United shot-stopper has also gained a legion of fans for her personality on and off the pitch.

Nike eventually buckled to public pressure after their kit fiasco from the Women's World Cup when they didn't put Earps' jersey for sale.

Both times Nike have put the kit on sale online it has sold out instantly.
