The goalkeeper fended off competition from Stuart Broad and Katarina Johnson-Thompson to win the award

Mary Earps has revealed her controversial opinion after winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The goalkeeper scooped the prize in Salford on Tuesday night, beating Stuart Broad and Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the process.

Earps has been recognised after a stellar year for club and country, with the 30-year-old becoming a national hero in the process.

The shot-stopper helped England make the final of the Women's World Cup back in the summer, even saving a penalty in the 1-0 defeat to Spain.

And Earps impressed for Manchester United, keeping 14 WSL clean sheets last term.

Speaking to the BBC on the red carpet, the goalkeeper was asked to give her controversial opinion.

And she then disclosed that she doesn't like Sunday roasts any more, which is certain to raise a few eyebrows.

Given Christmas is just days away, people around the country are looking forward to tucking into their roast dinners.

Judging by Earps' comments, however, the United goalkeeper could go for a different dish instead.

Other athletes in attendance also gave their controversial opinions.

Johnson-Thompson said she hates Harry Potter when asked what she hates that everybody else loves.

Michael Owen simply responded with 'olives' when quizzed.

Alex Scott revealed she hates salt and vinegar crisps, insisting she's a 'ready salted girl'.

And Broad, who finished second in the votes, disclosed that he's 'not a massive fan' of popcorn.

Earps, meanwhile, praised her England team-mates after securing the gong.

And the England and United star stated she was 'humbled' to have won the award ahead of such strong rivals.

“First of all, I’m so humbled to be on a list of such incredible athletes,” she said.

“Sport is a fantastic thing where it brings the world together and it’s been brilliant to listen to everyone’s stories, so congratulations to you all.

“Also, thanks everyone for voting for me! I should have probably started with that one.
