Jermaine Jenas has branded a fan a 'muppet' on social media after Mary Earps won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award on Tuesday night.

The 30-year-old fended off competition from Stuart Broad and Katarina Johnson-Thompson to secure the prestigious prize.

Earps was recognised after playing a key role as England reached the final of the Women's World Cup back in the summer.

She played in all of the Lionesses' matches and also saved a penalty in the final, even if her side crashed to defeat.

Earps has since taken to Instagram to post a message to her one million followers.

The United shot-stopper shared an image of herself holding the trophy and said: "About last night.. wow!"

Jenas was among those to comment on the post.

"One of our own!!! Well done you," said the former Newcastle and Tottenham star, who works for the BBC these days.

One fan, however, appeared to be confused by his comments.

"'One of our own' ...really she is from Nottingham and played for numerous teams before joining Man Utd and never played for your youth team so please explain," they remarked.

And Jenas then hit back, saying: "We went to the same school in Nottingham you muppet!"

A different supporter replied to Jenas and said: "Well maybe you should have said that then and I would have understood."

Both Jenas and Earps attended the Becket School in Nottingham.

Meanwhile, other celebrities also sent messages of support to Earps after the 30-year-old became the third woman in a row to win SPOTY.

Beth Mead scooped the honour last year after helping England win the European Championships.

And, before that, Emma Raducanu trumped the competition after her sensational US Open triumph in tennis.

Jamie Redknapp hailed Earps by saying: "Englands number 1 England , Englands number 1..."

John Terry said 'congratulations', while former TOWIE star Mark Bright sent four love hearts.

Lauren Hemp, who plays alongside Earps for England, said: "YESSSS MARYYYY."

She added: “I am going to try this Christmas to get some time to reflect and think about it all.

“It has been an incredible couple of years and I just feel really, really grateful to have been given an opportunity to fulfil my wildest dreams.
