Manchester United have announced they have appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.

The ex-Red Devils man, who played under Sir Alex Ferguson, will take over from his former team-mate and fellow midfielder Darren Fletcher in the Old Trafford dugout.

Since the club announced Ruben Amorim’s departure last Monday, Fletcher had assumed a caretaker role against Burnley and Brighton.

Carrick's first game in charge is set to be the Manchester derby on Saturday.

New head coach Carrick said: ““Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour.

“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also considered for the role before the final decision was made.

Carrick previously stepped into the role following Solskjaer's departure in November 2021.

During that brief three-match spell as interim boss, he secured victories in two fixtures, with the third ending level.

His tenure came to an end when Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the club's temporary manager.

The Wallsend-born coach transitioned seamlessly from player to staff member at United, initially joining Jose Mourinho's backroom team upon hanging up his boots at the conclusion of the 2017/18 campaign.

He subsequently remained on the coaching staff throughout Solskjaer's 168-game reign as permanent manager.

Carrick's sole permanent managerial position came with Middlesbrough, where he spent two and a half years at the helm before being dismissed last June.

His arrival at the Riverside in 2022 proved transformative, with the club sitting 21st in the Championship table when he took over.

An impressive run saw Boro accumulate 40 points from his opening 17 matches, propelling them to fourth place and a play-off semi-final against Coventry, which they lost.

Subsequent seasons proved less successful, with the team finishing eighth and then tenth, narrowly missing the top six on both occasions.

Ruben Amorim was relieved of his duties on January 5 after 14 months at the helm, prompting the club to hand temporary control to Darren Fletcher.
