Manchester United lost late to West Ham on Sunday in controversial circumstances

The Premier League have written a statement after Manchester United were furious with VAR following the controversial decision to award West Ham a penalty on Sunday afternoon.

Jarrod Bowen struck late to deal Erik ten Hag a hefty blow in a 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium in the Premier League.

But the decision to award a penalty has been contended by United fans after VAR helped make the call.

A loose ball in the box saw a tangle of legs with Matthijs de Ligt adjudged to have fouled Danny Ings.

However, the ball also appeared to strike Ings on the arm - which would have voided any penalty decision.

The referee did not agree after being sent to the monitor as Bowen struck a venomous penalty past Andre Onana as United players still fumed.

The Premier League have since responded with a statement on the incident.

It read: “The referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for a challenge by de Ligt on Ings.

“The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty."

David Coote was the on-field referee with VAR Michael Oliver suggesting he take a second look at the incident on the pitchside monitor.

United fans were furious with the decision and vented their anger on social media.

One fan said: "If that’s a pen then don’t know anymore… this is RIDICULOUS."
