EXCLUSIVE: A former Premier League star has fired a warning to the Dutchman

Former Liverpool and Leeds star Dominic Matteo has warned Erik ten Hag he probably faces the sack at Manchester United if the fallen giants end their season on a low.

The Red Devils have endured a problematic campaign, having previously been tipped to challenge for the Premier League title.

While United did well to draw 2-2 with Liverpool last weekend, their hopes of securing Champions League football for next season are all but over.

They currently sit 11 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with just seven league games remaining.

Amid United's plight, there's been talk of Ten Hag potentially being relieved of his duties.

Reports earlier in the week suggested the Dutchman's demeanour in training has players thinking he'll likely lose his job at Old Trafford.

And Matteo, speaking exclusively to GB News via William Hill, has warned Ten Hag results must improve in order to keep his job.

"I’ve not seen enough this season to suggest that Erik Ten Hag has improved Manchester United since last season," he said.

"I don’t see Manchester United improving game by game, there are very inconsistent and another set of bad results between now and the end of the season could see Man Utd dismissing Ten Hag.

"However, unless they feel there is a suitable candidate to come in and take Manchester United forward, they may still give Ten Hag time to fix the issues and push them onto Champions League next season."

The Red Devils have been linked with several managers amid the uncertainty over Ten Hag's future.

Julian Nagelsmann is believed to be of interest to United, though the Germany boss is currently focused on this year's European Championships.

Thomas Tuchel has been linked amid his imminent exit from Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

Speculation surrounding Graham Potter is refusing to die down, especially given his availability and the fact he recently turned down the Ajax job.

There have been whispers Gareth Southgate is of interest to United.

And Roberto De Zerbi has emerged as a potential candidate, too.

A shining light for United this season has been the form of Scott McTominay.

The Scotland international has netted nine times this term, while also registering three assists.

He's got the same amount of goals as winger Alejandro Garnacho.

And only Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund have found the net more often.

Matteo has been impressed by McTominay and feels that, whatever happens, he's a player United should keep hold of.

"I’m a massive fan of Scott McTominay," he added.

"He has loads of energy and he would be in my team.

"He’s a loyal guy and has shown this season for Manchester United that he can score goals and drive the team forward.

"He must have more game time as if this is restricted, it could be best for him to move on.

"With the current situation at Manchester United, you need players in midfield who have legs and want to play for the team and have passion to succeed.

"McTominay has shown this for Scotland that he is capable of playing against the best and competing as he showed against Spain, so he can be pivotal to Manchester United in the future as he will be for Scotland at Euro 2024."

United will face off with Bournemouth on Saturday (5.30pm).

The Red Devils lost 3-0 to the Cherries at Old Trafford back in December.
