A former Manchester United star has urged the club to “remember their history” as they look to rebuild with Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils have endured a rough 12 years as they try to work their way back to Premier League glory. Facing many managers and personal changes, the club have yet to find the right combination that will bring them back to the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.
United finished last season languishing down in 15th as Amorim was brought in to try to steady the ship. Old Trafford legend Nicky Butt has now urged the former Sporting Lisbon star to remind the club of who they are to find success again.

He told GB News: “There are very few clubs in the world I’d call institutions - Liverpool, Man United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus. They’re not just football clubs, they’re institutions.

"You have to make sure, when new staff come in, that they’re aware of and understand the history of the football club."
Butt was part of the Class of ‘92 and went on to win six Premier League titles at Old Trafford as well as three FA Cups, four Community Shields, and the Champions League.

The 50-year-old argued that personnel need to know the history of the club to understand the weight of expectation.
He continued: “They need to know about the Cliff training ground, Littleton Road, the history of the Busby Babes, and that everything is built on that.
“The club is built on the Busby Babes and the Munich Air Disaster. It’s not built around the ’94 team that won the first league in 25 years or the ’99 treble winners. It’s built on the foundation of the disaster."

The Busby Babes are an iconic part of Manchester United history

The Busby Babes were a Manchester United team built by manager Sir Matt Busby in the 1950s, known for their attacking football and homegrown players like Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, and Eddie Colman.
On 6 February 1958, while returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, their plane crashed during takeoff in Munich, Germany, after a refuelling stop in snowy conditions.
The Munich air disaster killed 23 people, including eight United players and three club staff, and left several others seriously injured. The tragedy devastated the club but also became a defining moment in Manchester United’s history.

Butt also put his faith in Amorim, but argued the club needs to give him time to see results under his leadership.
“They can’t keep sacking managers; they’ve got to give him time," he concluded.
"They’ve got to let him have a couple of transfer windows - maybe three - to get players that suit his system of play and back him. It would have to be really bad over the first six months for him to be sacked. But if it’s November or December and they’re still not winning, not playing the right football, not scoring goals, and sitting in 15th or 16th place, then it might be different."
