The Uruguayan is facing a ban for his actions

Luis Suarez has once again found himself at the centre of controversy, this time in Major League Soccer, after being filmed appearing to spit at a Seattle Sounders coach following Inter Miami’s heavy defeat in the Leagues Cup final.

The 38-year-old striker, who has long carried a reputation as one of football’s most combustible characters, saw his frustration boil over after Miami were beaten 3-0 on Sunday night.

What should have been a historic evening for Seattle, with their first Leagues Cup triumph, was overshadowed by the post-match chaos.

Footage circulated online showed Suárez confronting a Sounders staff member on the pitch in the moments after the final whistle.

He moved face-to-face with the coach before seemingly spitting as Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari attempted to intervene and pull him away.

The incident capped a stormy end to the match, with players from both teams seen grappling and squaring up as tempers flared.

For Suarez, the images will do little to soften a reputation already scarred by repeated disciplinary controversies.

His career has been full of moments of brilliance but there have been plenty of negative headlines as well.

He received an eight-match ban in 2011 for racially abusing Patrice Evra, followed by his infamous refusal to shake Evra’s hand months later.

There have been three separate biting incidents as well, most memorably on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.

He has also clashed with officials and opponents across stints at Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid.

This latest outburst may now trigger a lengthy ban.

Major League Soccer has yet to comment, but the league’s disciplinary committee is expected to deliver a verdict in the coming days.

Any suspension would not only impact Suarez but also disrupt Inter Miami’s momentum heading into the final stretch of their MLS campaign.

The incident overshadowed what was a dominant display from Seattle on the pitch.

The Sounders struck first in the 26th minute when Osaze De Rosario rose above his marker to power home a header.

Inter Miami had chances to respond after half-time but lacked the composure in front of goal.

Their hopes were dashed when Georgi Minoungou won a penalty, coolly dispatched by Alex Roldan after his brother Cristian handed him the ball.

Paul Rothrock then sealed the result late on, sliding the ball past Ustari to complete a famous 3-0 victory.

While Seattle celebrated, Miami were left to reflect on both their defeat and the cloud cast by their star forward’s actions.

The club has not yet commented publicly on Suárez’s behaviour, though a ban could see him miss Miami’s next fixture after the international break against Charlotte FC on September 13.

How the situation plays out remains to be seen.
