Speaking exclusively to GB News, Liverpool hero Jason McAteer is not happy with one new signing at Anfield

Liverpool star Milos Kerkez has come under fire since signing from Bournemouth, with a club legend the latest to stick the boot in.

Fan favourite Jason McAteer, who made 100 appearances for the club in the 1990s, has hit out at the Hungary international after his £40million move to the Reds.

Kerkez had a stunning campaign last season on the south coast, even landing himself a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

With Andy Robertson's career waning, the 21-year-old was eyed as the perfect replacement for the swashbuckling Scotsman, known for his marauding runs down the left-hand side.

That has failed to materialise, however, with the defender floundering in the early stages of his Anfield career.

And while the former AC Milan youth prospect has only played 13 matches for Liverpool, some fans are already turning on him.

That includes McAteer, who exclusively told GB News that the big lights at Anfield might be shine a little too brightly for the youngster.

The former Republic of Ireland star said: "Sounds like a contradiction, but I think Kerkez has had enough time to bed in; he's had 13 or so games, he's probably missed two or three of them.

"I just think Kerkez is struggling with confidence and his role. I think he's struggling tactically. I think at the moment the job is slightly too big for him.

"He seems a little lost. It’s one thing playing for Bournemouth, it's another playing for Liverpool.

"The expectation is enormous, and you feel it straight away. There's no room for error at Liverpool; you're performance is scrutinised by just about everybody.

"So I actually think it would do him a favour to take him out of the team and give him a moment to sit and watch and gain an understanding of what is required from the manager’s tactics."

Liverpool have come under fire recently after four Premier League matches lost in a row - including to Chelsea and Manchester United.

It comes after winning five consecutive league games which had taken them to the top of the table.

Now, Arne Slot's side trail league leaders Arsenal by seven points.

And while it is early days, McAteer believes restoring Robertson to the starting XI might be the best answer until Kerkez has had time to attune to life on Merseyside.

McAteer continued: "Jurgen Klopp did it to Andy Robertson. Andy Robertson came in and played four or five games and was taken out of the team; he just didn't adjust quickly enough for Jurgen, so he was taken out.

"Trent was in and out of the team until finally, the penny dropped. With Robertson, finally, the penny dropped, and look what happened, they became the two best full-backs in the world.

"There were lots of players who Klopp did this too, the penny didn't drop that quickly, and he took them out of the team, and then they were back in two or three games later.

"You know, he's there long-term, Kerkez, it will do him no harm just taking him out of the firing line at the minute, and play Andy Robertson, just settle everything down.

"That area, I've just mentioned, teams are using that area to hurt Liverpool.

"Just get Andy Robertson back in the team, just let everything calm down, and then gradually you bring Kerkez back in."
