Ibrahima Konate is poised to leave Anfield after a five-year spell

Liverpool are facing the prospect of losing another senior star this summer, with Ibrahima Konate increasingly expected to leave Anfield after contract talks failed to produce a breakthrough.

The France international has been a crucial figure in Liverpool's defence since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, establishing himself as one of the club's most dependable performers across both the Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot eras.

But despite months of discussions over an extension, Konate is now edging towards the exit door with his current deal rapidly approaching its conclusion.

The 26-year-old had previously suggested that progress was being made behind the scenes and appeared confident that an agreement would eventually be reached.

Back in April, Konate attempted to ease concerns surrounding his future by insisting negotiations were moving in the right direction.

"There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement," he said.

"I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible but we are in a good way.

"For sure, there is a big chance that I'm here next season. This is what I've always wanted."

However, despite that optimism, a deal has yet to be finalised and Liverpool now appear at serious risk of seeing one of their most important defenders depart.

Konate has enjoyed considerable success during his time on Merseyside, helping Liverpool lift a Premier League title as well as multiple domestic trophies.

His powerful partnership with Virgil van Dijk has often provided the foundation for Liverpool's success, making his potential departure a significant blow for Slot as he prepares for another title challenge.

The uncertainty surrounding Konate comes during a summer of major change at Anfield.

Liverpool supporters recently bid emotional farewells to long-serving stars Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson during the club's final match of the season against Brentford.

Both players left the pitch to standing ovations after years of service and trophy-laden careers that cemented their status among Liverpool's modern greats.

Konate, however, now appears set to leave without receiving a similar goodbye.

The defender has been linked with several elite European clubs over the past year, with Real Madrid heavily credited with interest at various stages.

Yet reports now suggest Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as the leading contenders for his signature.

A move to the French champions would see Konate return to his hometown after spending much of his professional career abroad.

Born in Paris before making his breakthrough in Germany, the centre-back could be tempted by the opportunity to play for one of Europe's most ambitious clubs while moving closer to family and friends.

PSG are already blessed with significant defensive depth, boasting players such as Marquinhos, Willian Pacho and Illia Zabarnyi among their options at the back.

But the club remain eager to strengthen further as they continue their pursuit of domestic and European dominance.

For Liverpool, the prospect of losing Konate represents another major headache during a pivotal summer.

And unless there is a dramatic breakthrough in negotiations, the defender's four-year spell at Anfield now appears to be approaching its conclusion, with a return to Paris looking increasingly likely after this summer's World Cup.
