The airport became the latest to take a dig at the departing defender

Liverpool John Lennon Airport delivered a brutal dig at departing defender Trent Alexander-Arnold following his controversial move to Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, announced his decision to leave his boyhood club last month and has faced widespread criticism from Liverpool fans.

The England international decided to move to the Spanish capital upon the expiry of his Liverpool contract, meaning the club were not due any transfer fee, particularly upsetting supporters.

However, in order for Alexander-Arnold to feature in the Club World Cup Real Madrid agreed a £10million fee with the Premier League champions to allow the full-back to join in time to participate in the tournament.

Many fans feel betrayed by the defender's decision to leave for the Spanish capital, including UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett who has gone on record to voice his disappointment.

Now, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the latest to take a swipe at the departing defender.

The airport’s official X account replied to Alexander-Arnold’s online video that detailed his first day as a Real Madrid player.

“He even flew from Manchester as well,” the airport joked, while initially including an emoji of a snake.

After less than an hour, and thousands of views, the airport changed the emoji to an unimpressed face, but not before thousands of fans had the chance to screenshot.

It is not the first time Alexander-Arnold has been the brunt of such a dig.

Recently, after his Real Madrid unveiling, Alexander-Arnold shocked the world by producing a near-perfect Spanish speech prompting questions as to how long he had been learning the language and, in turn, preparing for a move away from Liverpool.

Educational language platform Duolingo joined the chorus of online jokes, saying: "Thanks for your 1000 day Spanish streak Trent!"

The tweet insinuated that Alexander-Arnold has been using the app to learn Spanish for over three years.
