Leeds are facing a tough battle to stay in the Premier League this season

Leeds boss Daniel Farke has opened up on the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who joined the club on a free transfer on Friday afternoon.

The Whites are bidding to stay in the Premier League this season after winning the Championship the campaign before.

However, the odds are stacked against them - the last two seasons have seen all three promoted clubs go straight back down to the second-tier at the first time of asking.

Leeds are looking to buck that trend and have been active in the transfer window as a result.

Jaka Bijol, Anton Stach, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Lukas Nmecha are just a few of the players that have joined in a busy summer at Elland Road.

But perhaps the most high-profile signing so far has been the acquisition of Calvert-Lewin, who joined Leeds on a free transfer on Friday - with news breaking before Farke's press conference that the former Everton star had penned a deal.

When asked about the striker, the German coach said: "We haven't officially announced it yet, but he is more or less with us right now.

"He has just agreed his terms so he will be supporting us in our first match and he will be a member of our squad from this afternoon.

"We are all pretty happy and delighted that he will wear a Leeds shirt from now on.

"He is obviously a proven player at Premier League level.

"As a newly-promoted side, we want to sign players that have already delivered at the top level but are still at a good age and on the way up in their career. These boxes are all ticked by him.

"The key for him right now is to not be over-motivated. We will build his fitness step-by-step so that he is able to find confidence in his body again, but he has shown what he can do and he can be outstanding for us."

After Farke had told Patrick Bamford he was not part of his plans, the Whites were desperate to bring in some experienced firepower.

However, Calvert-Lewin's injury problems have been well-documented and over nine years at Everton, nearly two of those years were spent on the sidelines.

But the 28-year-old is not the only injury concern in West Yorkshire and Farke admitted one player is facing a battle to be fit for this weekend.

Farke said: "There will be a late decision made on Jayden Bogle.

"He has been out for two and a half weeks now with this injury, but he was part-integrated into team training on Wednesday.

"He will join us for a full training session this afternoon and then it depends on how his body will react. There is still a chance for him to get minutes on Monday."

Leeds take on Everton at Elland Road in their first Premier League match of the season; potentially reuniting Calvert-Lewin with his former club.
