The former defender won two European Cups during his playing days

Tributes have poured in for Larry Lloyd after the former Nottingham Forest and England star died at the age of 75.

The defender starred for Liverpool for five years between 1969 and 1974 before proceeding to join Coventry.


He then spent five years at Nottingham Forest, helping the club win two European Cups while playing under Brian Clough.

Lloyd also had a spell at Wigan, while he represented England on four occasions.

Forest have paid tribute to their former hero and sent their condolences to his family.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Larry Lloyd," they wrote in a statement.

"Part of the Miracle Men, Larry was an integral player in the Forest side that memorably won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, making 218 appearances for the club in total.

"We send our condolences to Larry’s friends and family at this truly sad time.

"Rest in peace, Larry."

Fans on X have also paid tribute to the former defender.

"A character you’d always want on your side. RIP Larry," said one user.

"Rest in peace, Larry. His legacy will forever be cherished in football history," said a second.

A third said: "Rip Larry. What a great player, and also great character."

A fourth paid tribute to Lloyd by saying: "Sad news. Played a huge part in our success of the late 70's. RIP Larry."

"Was a privilege to meet him and listen to him. Very sad news. RIP Larry," said a fifth.

Another user said: "Terribly sad news and a legend at the City Ground

"Had the pleasure of meeting Larry on many occasions. Also playing indoor cricket and back to the pub after with him

"RIP Larry, a great ambassador of our great team."

And a seventh said: "One of Cloughie’s European greats. They didn’t always agree but the mutual respect was off the scale. RIP Big Larry."

Lloyd started his career at Bristol Rovers before leaving for Liverpool in April 1969.

Pursued by iconic boss Bill Shankly, he was seen as the ideal successor to Ron Yeats.

Lloyd became a regular under Shankly and was then recognised by Sir Alf Ramsey, with the defender making his international debut against Wales in 1971.

Lloyd won the league title with Liverpool two years later, while he also helped the Reds win the UEFA Cup in 1972.

After moving to Forest in 1977, he only added to his legacy.

He made 212 appearances for the club and was vital as they won two European Cups under Clough.

He retired from football in 1983 after a three-year stint at Wigan.

Lloyd managed Wigan for just over two years between 1981 and 1983.

His last management gig was at Notts County, with Lloyd leaving his role in October 1984.
