The Real Madrid star was unable to fire his country to glory on Sunday night

Alan Shearer believes Jude Bellingham 'wasn't happy at all' during England's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on Sunday night.

The Three Lions were beaten after goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal, with the pair netting either side of a terrific strike from Cole Palmer.

For Bellingham, it was a frustrating night at the office.

The 21-year-old, who struggled to show his best form throughout the tournament, took his anger out on a water cooler at full time.

And Shearer, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, believes Bellingham 'wasn't happy at all' and 'showed it to the bench' during England's crushing defeat.

“Bellingham wasn’t happy. He was stuck on the left again. You could tell he wasn’t happy at all," said the former Newcastle, Blackburn and Southampton star.

“He had a disappointed look about him, his arms were up, he was looking towards the bench for guidance.

"He could see things weren’t going well and he wasn’t happy with the lack of press and everything else.

“He was showing all of those emotions. I could see it, I was looking at him all the time.

"He was showing it to the bench. He’s not a left midfielder, so I sort of understood his emotions.

"I was really surprised Gareth Southgate went back to four at the back.”

Though England made the final, they were truthfully fortunate to go that far.

The Three Lions' inconsistency was infuriating, with England never really living up to expectations.

Shearer continued: “Our best 45 minutes of football in the whole tournament was when we played three at the back in the first half against the Netherlands.

“I thought he would go for that system again.

"It’s clear that Foden and Bellingham don’t want to play on the left in that system.”

While England lost, the future does seem bright.

Young players such as Bellingham, Palmer and Bukayo Saka all made their mark at the competition, despite the Three Lions not always convincing.

And Bellingham insists success will come in the coming years, even though the Real Madrid star was disappointed with his team's defeat.

“We all wanted nothing more than to make history and to make the people of England proud and we haven’t managed to do it, we didn’t quite deliver," said the former Borussia Dortmund and Birmingham star.

“There’s reasons for that and I’m sure as a team and going forward, we’ll analyse it but I think it’s a young group still.

"It’s really disappointing because at some point we do have to deliver, but there are experiences and there’s things we can take from this tournament going forward.

“I suppose if you look at everything negatively, nothing will ever change.

"So it’s important we pick the positives and the negatives together and find a way to one day get England over the line.

“I came here to win. We came here to win. Like I said, there’s experiences that we can take going into the next one. So I suppose you could say that’s kind of some solace.

“It’s one of those where you probably need a bit more time to digest it and analyse it, and we’ll do that as a team, individually, look over how it went and bounce back.

“It’s a young team with a lot of potential and I know people be frustrated that we haven’t delivered yet, but I definitely feel that it is coming.”
