A Scunthorpe United defender has conveyed profound appreciation to supporters following successful surgery after sustaining injuries during Saturday's horrific knife attack on a Huntingdon-bound train.

Jonathan Gjoshe, 22, who suffered a slash wound to his bicep during the incident, is now recuperating at home and anticipates a complete recovery.


The footballer released an emotional statement through his club, declaring: "I would like to thank the staff, the players and everyone who sent their well wishes, and to all the fans and everybody who has contributed towards the fundraising.

"I really appreciate everything. From the bottom of my heart, thank you."

Football supporters nationwide have rallied behind the injured player, contributing more than £4,000 to assist with his recovery.

The attack occurred on the 6.25pm Doncaster to London King's Cross service, which was diverted to Huntingdon station shortly after 7.30pm on Saturday evening.

Eleven individuals sustained injuries during the violent incident aboard the nine-carriage LNER train.

Gjoshe had featured for Bottesford Town, where he maintains dual registration, mere hours before boarding the ill-fated service.

The young defender suffered a slash wound to his bicep and received immediate medical attention at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Scunthorpe United initially confirmed on Monday that their player had sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

The National League club revealed that Gjoshe underwent surgery on Tuesday to treat the wound to his arm.

The fundraising initiative, established by fan website Iron-Bru.co.uk, exceeded its original £2,000 goal in under 24 hours as football enthusiasts across Britain demonstrated remarkable solidarity.

Organiser Matt Ellis confirmed that contributions have now surpassed £4,300, with more than 240 individuals donating to support the injured defender.

The funds will assist with essential adjustments including care provisions, transport expenses and compensation for lost income whilst Gjoshe recuperates from his injuries.

Scunthorpe manager Andy Butler expressed the club's unwavering support, stating: "It hits close to home, it really does. The club will back him every step of the way in terms of recovery."

The club has requested privacy for Gjoshe and his family during this challenging period.

Anthony Williams, 32, faced Peterborough Magistrates' Court on Monday, where he was charged with ten counts of attempted murder relating to the train attack.

The defendant faces additional charges of possessing a kitchen knife and causing actual bodily harm to a police officer during his arrest.

Williams is also accused of attempting to murder a 17-year-old boy at a DLR station in London earlier that same Saturday.

The court scheduled his next appearance for 1 December at Cambridge Crown Court, where proceedings will continue.

The charges reflect the severity of Saturday's violent incidents, which left multiple victims requiring medical treatment across two separate locations.
