The 39-year-old could make an emotional return to a former club this summer

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly exploring a sensational move for Jamie Vardy as the crisis-hit club look to rebuild following their relegation to League One.

The 39-year-old striker is currently with Cremonese in Serie A, but speculation is mounting over where he will play next season.

And according to The Wednesday World, the club's new owners have discussed the possibility of bringing the veteran marksman back to his hometown club in what would be one of the most eye-catching transfers of the summer.

For Vardy, the move would carry huge emotional significance.

The former Leicester City and England star was born in Sheffield and supported Wednesday as a boy.

He also spent six years in the club's academy between 1996 and 2002 before being released long before his remarkable rise to the top of the game.

Vardy went on to forge one of football's most extraordinary stories.

After working his way up through non-league football, he joined Leicester and became a club legend, helping the Foxes win the Premier League against all odds in 2016.

He scored prolifically during a glittering 13-year spell at the King Power Stadium before departing last summer.

Reports suggest that if Vardy opts to return to English football and is willing to play in League One, Wednesday would be keen to offer him the chance to fulfil a childhood dream.

However, a romantic return to Leicester has also been mooted, with some believing he could rejoin the club in a different capacity if he chooses to step away from top-flight football.

Vardy has continued to compete at a high level in Italy this season, bringing his trademark energy and predatory instincts to Cremonese's battle in Serie A.

The striker and his teammates are preparing for a crucial final-day clash against Udinese as they fight to preserve their top-flight status.

Wednesday, meanwhile, are attempting to move forward after one of the most turbulent periods in the club's modern history.

The Owls endured a miserable Championship campaign, finishing bottom after being hit with an 18-point deduction for financial issues.

Earlier this month, however, the club's long-running ownership uncertainty finally came to an end when a takeover was completed.

Supporters were handed further encouragement when it was confirmed Wednesday will not face a points deduction in League One next season.

That has raised hopes of an immediate push for promotion.

And few signings would generate more excitement at Hillsborough Stadium than the return of one of Sheffield's most famous footballing sons.

For Wednesday fans, the prospect of seeing Vardy in blue and white remains a tantalising possibility.
