The Liverpool icon has snubbed Sir Alex Ferguson

Jamie Carragher has been called out by football fans after calling Pep Guardiola the greatest coach of all time, instead of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Guardiola could leave Manchester City at the end of the season after a glittering stint in the dugout that has seen him win six Premier League titles.

The Spaniard, who replaced Manuel Pellegrini back in the summer of 2016, has also won the Champions League and numerous FA Cup and EFL Cup titles during his time at the Etihad.

Writing for the Telegraph, Carragher paid the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach the ultimate compliment.

He wrote: "Pep Guardiola is the greatest football coach of all time and we should cherish every remaining minute of his Premier League career."

Amid uncertainty over Guardiola's future, the Liverpool icon added: "If an announcement is imminent before May, Guardiola’s peerless contribution to elevating Premier League standards must and will be acknowledged. He is the No 1.

"Some managers are legends because they win. Others leave their mark because they change and elevate the game.

"Guardiola ticks all the boxes, winning trophies in such a fashion that his legacy extends way beyond the clubs he has managed.

"The multiple titles Guardiola won at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City are just one facet of his career. His broader impact separates him from others.

"For as long as people are studying, writing about and commentating on football, they will define the start of a new era in our sport from the day Guardiola took over at Barcelona in June 2008. Football was revolutionised because of his methods."

However, many fans have criticised Carragher by saying he should have reserved those lofty words for Ferguson instead.

The Scot won 13 league titles in 26 years during his time with Manchester United before retiring in 2013.

One X user wrote: "Fergie was better than Pep."

A second stated: "Recency bias Jamie. [Sir Alex] Ferguson, [Brian] Clough, [Bill] Shankly would be better candidates."

Another referenced Ferguson's achievements at Aberdeen, as well as United, saying: "Jamie this is such a bad take, Ferguson beating Real Madrid with Aberdeen to win the European cup and winning the Scottish League against Rangers and Celtic are better achievements than anything Pep has done in football. Your anti Man United bias on show here lad."

A fourth penned a message saying: "Guardiola is not the best coach of all time. What’s the metric? [Jose] Mourinho is miles better. [Carlo] Ancelloti would like a word. [Arsene] Wenger and Sir Alex are in a different class of legend. J Carragher is a little less brilliant than he would like to think."

A fifth argued: "Best coach of all time is Sir Alex. Do you not know anything?"

And a sixth said: "The best coach of all time will always be Sir Alex Ferguson!"

Guardiola initially failed to win the league at City during his first season in charge.

The club finished third in the 2016/17 campaign, with Antonio Conte's Chelsea reigning supreme.

Ever since, however, Guardiola has consistently delivered the goods.

Should he leave City come the summer, then three managers are reportedly under consideration to replace him.

Xabi Alonso and Enzo Maresca are targets, with the duo both available following their recent departures from Real Madrid and Chelsea respectively.

Como boss Cesc Fabregas is another managerial target, too.
