The Manchester United loanee was subbed on and off against former club Manchester City

A torrid Sunday afternoon unfolded for Jadon Sancho at Villa Park, where the winger endured the indignity of being withdrawn after entering as a replacement himself.

The Manchester United loanee took to the field in the 29th minute when Emi Buendia succumbed to injury during Villa's clash with Manchester City.

Yet Sancho's involvement lasted merely 45 minutes before Unai Emery decided to make another change.

The 25-year-old saw his number raised in the 74th minute, making way for Evann Guessand as part of a double substitution.

The episode marks another setback for Sancho, whose loan spell at Villa has failed to ignite since his summer arrival.

The winger's opportunities have been severely restricted since arriving from Old Trafford on a temporary deal late in the transfer window.

Prior to Sunday's encounter, he had featured just once as a substitute in the Premier League, coming on against Sunderland last month.

His most recent start came in midweek during Villa's Europa League defeat to Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands.

That European fixture marked his return following a period of absence due to illness.

Despite the limited minutes, Emery's decision to replace him mid-match suggested dissatisfaction with the player's contribution against the reigning champions.

Villa held a slender advantage when Sancho took to the pitch, with Matty Cash having struck early to put the hosts ahead.

The loanee did threaten the City goal before his removal, cutting inside from the left flank and forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into action. The goalkeeper denied both his initial strike and the subsequent rebound attempt.

His departure from the pitch revealed his displeasure with the decision.

The winger appeared to bypass Guessand without acknowledging his replacement and similarly avoided contact with Emery after leaving the field, clearly aggrieved at his premature withdrawal.

The substitution sparked immediate reaction across social media platforms. One supporter posted: "Got to be tough to take for Sancho," whilst another commented: "That Villa loan spell does not seem to be panning out at so far."

Earlier this month, Emery addressed questions about Sancho's form, stating: "We have to build a team again to be as strong as possible in our structure and get new players to adapt as soon as possible."

The winger has faced persistent scrutiny since his 2021 United transfer.

Villa went on to beat City 1-0 in front of a raucous crowd at Villa Park, their fourth Premier League win in a row.
