Former England star felt Tuchel’s squad rotation had a negative impact

England suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Senegal at the City Ground on Tuesday evening, marking their first-ever loss to an African nation.

The result capped off a dismal international fortnight for Thomas Tuchel's side.

Goals from Ismalia Sarr, Habiba Diarra and a 93rd-minute strike from Cheikh Sabaly sealed a deserved victory for the visitors.

Harry Kane had given England an early lead with his 73rd international goal, but the Three Lions failed to build on their promising start.

The defeat followed a lacklustre 1-0 victory over Andorra last week, where England were booed off at half-time.

Tuchel made 10 changes for the Senegal match, but his reshuffled side showed little improvement and was comprehensively outplayed.

Former England striker Ian Wright expressed serious concerns about the team's performance, claiming the players were not on the same wavelength as a result of Tuchel's squad rotation.

Speaking on ITV, Wright said: “I don’t want to make excuses but ten changes coming off the back of a poor result against Andorra, you want some stability in the team, familiarity.

"You want to play well, get it going and maybe bring the subs on that way.

"From the start, there wasn't no cohesion, weren't really clicking. I thought one-on-ones were very good and the crossing.

"But we wasn't passing through their lines. We wasn't causing them enough problems."

He concluded by admitting England's goal came through an "indecisive" attempt to play out of the back by Senegal, and that the African side deserved the victory.

Roy Keane shared Wright's assessment, stating: "England, on one hand, you don't want to overreact but the signs aren't great. It's been a bad couple of days."

Keane went further in his criticism, suggesting deeper problems within the England camp.

"I look at this England group, I know we're on the outside looking in, I think there's something amiss there," he continued.

"They don't look like a happy group. Obviously, they'll be disappointed with the result, I don't mean in that sense.

"But are they all in it together? Is there that proper spirit amongst the group? I'm not so sure."

Wright emphasised that resolving these issues falls squarely on Tuchel's shoulders.

"It's best that he finds out as early as possible simply because he knows the job he's got in hand," Wright said, adding that the German manager must get the players to gel and play with freedom.

The former Arsenal star also slammed referee Stephanie Frappart's decision to disallow Jude Bellingham's late equaliser, after visiting the VAR monitor.

Bellingham had the ball in the net after a scramble in the Senegal area, but referee Stephanie Frappart disallowed the goal following a VAR review.

The decision came despite replays showing the ball hit Levi Colwill's arm, arguably on the shoulder, unintentionally, and he was not the scorer.

Wright called the decision "pathetic" and argued: "It's not deliberate though. He's not even looking. How can you give that?"

Bellingham's frustration boiled over after the final whistle, as he confronted the linesman before angrily kicking a drinks cooler.

Kane had to intervene, pushing his teammate onto the pitch to calm down and acknowledge Senegal's victory.

England skipper Kane echoed Wright's verdict and strongly criticised the VAR decision that denied his side a potential equaliser.

"If you know the rules it's not handball," Kane told ITV. "It would have got us back in the game at 2-2 and maybe we would have gone on and won the game so it's quite a big moment."

Despite the controversial decision, Kane refused to make excuses for England's poor display: "We're not going to panic but for sure, we know that we need to be better.

"There are some ideas that are new for the guys, we have new players coming into the team who don't have experience at the international level."

With the World Cup approaching rapidly, Kane stressed the urgency of improvement.
