The Red Devils hired Michael Carrick as an interim replacement for Ruben Amorim earlier this week

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has declared that the squad has fully embraced Michael Carrick's approach ahead of Saturday's Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old centre-back, recently recovered from injury, expressed his admiration for the newly appointed head coach following several training sessions this week.

"I've been really impressed," Maguire told Sky Sports. "He's got great ideas. He speaks really well. Tactically, he's really, really good."

The England international added: "I feel like he's brought a lot of energy to this week, and I think the players have bought into it."

Carrick's appointment comes during a turbulent spell for the Old Trafford club, who remain without a victory in 2026.

United drew 1-1 with Leeds United, who sit 16th in the table, before being held to a 2-2 stalemate by 19th-placed Burnley.

Their struggles deepened with an FA Cup elimination at home to Brighton.

Ruben Amorim was sacked during this difficult run, prompting the club to turn to Carrick as head coach until the season's end.

The former midfielder brings previous experience in the role, having guided United to wins over Arsenal and Villarreal during a temporary stint in November 2021, alongside a draw against Chelsea.

Maguire highlighted Carrick's development since his previous coaching role at the club, noting the valuable experience accumulated during his time managing Middlesbrough.

"Obviously, I knew Carras from before, and I spoke really highly of him. He was a magnificent coach when he was here under Ole [Gunnar Solskjær]," the defender explained.

"And obviously, now he's had a lot of experience at Middlesbrough as a manager. And I'm sure he's going to come in here and implement his ideas."

Maguire described Carrick as a club legend, expressing confidence that supporters would rally behind him.

"I must say, with him and all his coaching staff, I've been really impressed this week," he added.

The final weeks of Amorim's tenure saw performances become flat, with supporters criticising what they perceived as a lack of intensity.

Maguire explained that Carrick's primary objective has been revitalising the atmosphere at the training ground rather than overwhelming players with tactical instructions.

"I think he just wants to bring the energy back in the building, and I think that's so important," the defender said.

"Michael's played here, he's obviously performed in unbelievable teams, and he's been a magnificent player, so he knows what it's like to win here and what you need in a team and a group of people and a group of staff."

Carrick's first game will be against Manchester City on Saturday (12.30pm).
