The 40-year-old lost his job at Old Trafford on Monday

ESPN commentator Craig Burley has launched a scathing attack on Gary Neville's analysis of Manchester United's hunt for a new manager following Ruben Amorim's dismissal.

The former Scotland international took to X to share his thoughts after watching Neville's appearance on Sky Sports on Monday evening, which came shortly after news broke of Amorim's departure from Old Trafford.

Reposting footage of the former United captain's television segment, Burley wrote: "Verbal diarrhea... again!"

The 50-year-old Neville had been discussing what direction the club should take in their search for Amorim's replacement, with the Portuguese coach having been removed from his position earlier that day.

United have now cycled through around 10 managers since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.

Neville argued passionately that his former club must return to its traditional values when selecting their next head coach.

"I've always been very proud of what United is - adventurous, exciting football, playing young players, entertaining the crowd," he stated.

"Man United must take risks and be courageous and play with attacking football."

The Sky Sports pundit drew comparisons with other European giants, suggesting United should follow a similar path of unwavering commitment to their identity.

"United have got to appoint a manager who fits the DNA of their football club. Ajax will never change for anybody, Barcelona will never change for anybody, I don't think Man United should change for anybody. They should play the way in which they play," Neville added.

Burley's criticism came in the wake of Amorim's explosive post-match comments at Elland Road, where the Portuguese manager specifically referenced Neville by name whilst discussing the scrutiny he had faced.

"I know my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, it's not (Antonio) Conte, it's not (Jose) Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United and it's going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change," Amorim declared following the draw against Leeds.

He continued: "If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles, the criticism, everything we need to change the club."

The former Sporting Lisbon boss emphasised his desire to be "the manager of this team, not just the coach" and insisted he would not resign from his position.

Those remarks proved to be his final public statements as United's head coach, with his dismissal confirmed less than 24 hours later.

Amorim's exit followed a meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox after the 1-1 draw with bottom-placed Wolves the previous Tuesday, during which the Portuguese reverted to his favoured three centre-back formation.

Sources have indicated Amorim was informed that United's squad, strengthened by £250million worth of summer signings, deserved greater trust and were capable of producing more attacking football.

The club's official statement confirmed: "With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change."

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, currently coaching the Under-18s, has been appointed caretaker manager for Wednesday's fixture against Burnley.

Amorim joined from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024 and guided the team to the Europa League final in Bilbao last May.
