Mason Greenwood has been in fine form for Marseille and there have been rumours he could return to the England fold

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have united in their view that Mason Greenwood ought to give up on any prospect of representing England again.

The two former Three Lions strikers shared their assessment on the Rest is Football podcast, concluding that the Marseille forward should instead pursue international football with Jamaica.

Their verdict comes despite Greenwood's outstanding performances in France, which have sparked discussion about a potential recall ahead of next summer's World Cup.

However, England boss Thomas Tuchel has made his position unequivocal, stating definitively that the 23-year-old will play no part in his squad selections.

The former Manchester United attacker has been in remarkable form since his move to the south of France.

This campaign alone, he has netted 13 times whilst also providing four assists across 20 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side.

His latest contribution came in Marseille's Champions League triumph over Union Saint-Gilloise, where he struck twice with what Lineker described as "excellent finishes."

Such prolific output has inevitably fuelled speculation regarding a potential international return.

Yet with Tuchel's door firmly closed, the path to representing the Three Lions appears permanently blocked for the talented forward.

Discussing Greenwood on the podcast, Lineker remarked: "I want to talk about Mason Greenwood.

"He's been doing brilliantly since. I know there's a lot of controversy around him and he had that awfulness of his situation."

He continued: "He's gone abroad and he's performing, as he did last season, but this season at Marseille he's performing really well. Another two goals yesterday, excellent finishes."

Lineker added: "I think he's decided he is not going to try and play for England and that he is going to play for Jamaica, which is another option for him. Do you think that makes sense? It would be difficult for him here wouldn't it?"

Shearer concurred, stating: "I think it was the right decision for him to go to another country.

"He had to settle down and just try and go out and play football. I don't think anybody ever questioned his ability. He was a very good football player with a lot of talent."

Greenwood's England career amounts to just one appearance, earned during a Nations League fixture against Iceland in 2020.

That same international break proved controversial when he and Phil Foden were sent home following an alleged breach of Covid-19 protocols.

Both players reportedly invited two women to a separate area of the team hotel, prompting apologies from the pair. Then-manager Gareth Southgate labelled their conduct "naive."

Though selected for Euro 2020, injury ruled him out before the tournament began.

Greenwood obtained Jamaican citizenship and a passport three months before reportedly turning down an approach from the Reggae Boyz last year, suggesting lingering hopes of an England recall.
