Gary Lineker has been vocal in his calls for Trent Alexander-Arnold to start as a midfielder for England.

Gary Lineker has jokingly raised fears he 'might be wrong' after his calls for Trent Alexander-Arnold to start for England in midfield came to fruition against Serbia.

England's many options at right-back previously saw Alexander-Arnold miss out on Gareth Southgate's squads.

But there had long been a clamour for Alexander-Arnold to be moved into midfield for England and Southgate gave in recently.

Alexander-Arnold is now seen as a midfielder for England and was named in the starting line-up against Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener.

It's the first major tournament Alexander-Arnold has started in midfield, something Lineker was pleased to see when speaking before the match.

However, the BBC host joked that the 25-year-old simply had to deliver after clamouring for him to start in midfield for several years.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold, it's a big night for Trent," Lineker said.

"He moves into midfield. I've said for years and years and years, I think he's a midfield player.

"I think he ended up there [at full-back] by accident.

"I really hope he performs. But I might be wrong [laughs]."

Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas was full of praise for Alexander-Arnold too, going as far as to say that nobody can match the versatile England player's ability on the ball.

"What I like about him is you put him in any part of the pitch and he will deliver," he added.

"What I like, he plays forward. He does it with so much ease.

"Players like Saka and Gordon, they need to be so happy to see this type of player.

"In midfield, you always need to see the furthest player. If you can't see the furthest player, you start playing a little bit short.

"I haven't seen many players in my lifetime that they make this type of passing - short, long, switches of play - with so much ease, so much natural ability.

"He's got the whole lot for me."

Alexander-Arnold's main critics has been his defensive frailties at times, however, Rio Ferdinand wants to only focus on his best attributes.

"I think an important thing when you're talking about someone like Trent is not focusing on what he can't do," Ferdinand said.

"Focus on what he can do and he's actually got a great part of his game that is incomparable with anybody else really.

"He's good at everything and he can score goals as well."
