The Ballon d'Or has announced its nominees for 2024

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were in complete agreement over who should win the Ballon d'Or this year after the 30-man shortlist was announced.

Several England players were announced as part of the nominees with Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Harry Kane and Phil Foden all named.

Bellingham is one of the favourites to bag the award, alongside Real Madrid team-mates Vinicius Jr and Dani Carvajal.

It comes after Los Blancos won the Champions League and La Liga while Spain won Euro 2024 against England in the final.

Vinicius Jr is the favourite to bag the individual award after 15 goals in 26 La Liga appearances, with 24 in all competitions from 39 matches.

But Shearer and Lineker both insisted that Manchester City star Rodri should take home the Ballon d'Or after winning the Premier League and European Championship this year.

The midfielder was also named the player of the tournament at Euro 2024, which could give the 28-year-old the edge in the race.

"There’s only one player winning it," Shearer said on the Rest Is Football podcast.

"It can only be [Rodri]. I think he should win and will win it."

Lineker agreed and said: "I think Rodri deserves it.

"Obviously, they didn’t win the Champions League at City but they did win the Premier League and then the Euros with Spain where he was very much their leader.

"Young player of the year I’ve got a feeling will be Lamine Yamal. He could win that for the next five years!"

City icon Micah Richards was also inclined to agree but also believes Bellingham could have a huge say.

The former defender said: "Bellingham had won the Euros with England, he would be a big shout, a big possibility."

The Ballon d'Or has been dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi over the years but the two have seen their powers wane in recent times, moving to the Saudi Pro League and MLS respectively.
