Arsenal 4-1 Aston Villa: Mikel Arteta's men go five points clear of Manchester City

Gabriel Jesus made a stunning comeback from the bench tonight, finding the net almost immediately after stepping onto the pitch against Aston Villa.

The Brazilian striker, who has spent close to a year recovering from injury, collected a pass from Trossard on the edge of the box and curled a beautiful finish past Emi Martinez into the far corner.

What followed was pure emotion – Jesus whipped off his shirt to display a message reading "I belong to Jesus," earning himself a yellow card in the process.

It's been an incredibly long journey back for the forward, and this moment clearly meant everything to him.

The Gunners absolutely dominated the second half at the Emirates, rattling in four goals to blow Villa away.

Centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes got things started in the 48th minute, bundling home from one of Arsenal's trademark corners – his first start since picking up an injury back in November.

Villa's players were furious, appealing for a foul on goalkeeper Martinez, but the officials weren't having any of it and the goal stood.

Sky Sports' Alan Smith summed it up perfectly from the Emirates: "Talk about super sub. It's all going Arsenal's way! I thought this would be a close contest - but this second half, Arsenal have put their foot down and accelerated away from Aston Villa!"

Martin Odegaard then turned provider, winning possession in midfield before threading a lovely ball through to Martin Zubimendi, who slotted past Martinez to double the lead.

Leandro Trossard made it three with a thumping low drive from outside the box, though fans had to wait through a lengthy VAR offside check before celebrating.

Ollie Watkins grabbed a late consolation for Villa, tapping in from close range during stoppage time.

It was a tough night for Unai Emery's side, who arrived at the Emirates riding an impressive 11-match winning run – including that 2-1 victory over Arsenal just 24 days earlier.

Mikel Arteta's men have been remarkably consistent this campaign, suffering just two league defeats all season.

Villa came into the match without Matty Cash and Boubacar Kamara, both serving suspensions, and their plan to slow things down and frustrate the hosts simply didn't work.

The gap at the top could narrow slightly, mind you – second-placed Manchester City travel to Sunderland on New Year's Day, with kick-off at 20:00 GMT.

But for now, it's been a year to remember for the Gunners.
