Marco Silva's side have climbed into the top half with the win

Ryan Sessegnon netted the decisive strike as Fulham secured a crucial 1-0 triumph over Aston Villa at Craven Cottage, breathing new life into their European ambitions.

The winger, who committed his future to the club with a contract extension earlier this week, converted from close range after Emi Martinez had parried Sasa Lukic's header towards the end of the first half.

Marco Silva's side climbed to 10th in the table following the result, positioning themselves just two points adrift of Brighton in sixth place.

The victory proved particularly timely for the Cottagers, who had managed only a single win from their previous six matches.

Unai Emery's visitors produced an underwhelming display during a pivotal period in their campaign.

England manager Thomas Tuchel was among the spectators as Ollie Watkins squandered a well-worked opportunity in the opening period before firing over the crossbar after the break.

Morgan Rogers also failed to capitalise on the chances that came his way throughout the afternoon.

The Villains are still virtually guaranteed Champions League football next season, but this loss does put a small spanner in the works.

Watkins departed the pitch with ten minutes remaining, making way for Tammy Abraham, who similarly failed to find the target.

Skipper Joachim Andersen delivered an outstanding performance that saw him lead his teammates in tackles, interceptions and clearances.

Timothy Castagne thought he had doubled Fulham's lead with a headed effort, only for the goal to be chalked off due to a foul on Martinez.

Silva was left furious with the decision, believing the contact between Sander Berge and the Villa goalkeeper was mutual.

Match-winner Sessegnon was forced off with an injury during the second period, casting doubt over his availability for upcoming fixtures.

Villa's attention now turns to their Europa League semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest in four days' time.

Emery will be demanding a better performance, appearing visibly frustrated by his team's sloppy possession and inability to penetrate Fulham's defensive structure.

The absence of injured midfielder Amadou Onana was keenly felt as the visitors lacked their usual dynamism in the middle of the park.

Despite the setback, Villa should conclude the weekend holding at least a seven-point cushion over teams outside the Champions League spots with four matches remaining.

For Fulham, challenging fixtures against Arsenal and Bournemouth await, but European football is still well on the cards for the side from west London.
