Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has been spared jail after he crashed his Audi A3 while driving close to 100mph.
The 24-year-old has been handed a 14-month suspended sentence, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and driving without third party insurance.
He has also been given 180 hours of community service, and banned from driving for three years.
The 24-year-old's sentencing hearing was held at Chester Crown Court on Friday.
Williams was caught doing 99mph in a 70mph zone, driving in an 'erratic manner'.
He was also spotted with a passenger in the car, who is said to have been filming the pair, and a balloon in his mouth. He has admitted to "showing off" in front of the passenger.
The former United defender was driving an Audi A3, before colliding with a Ford Fiesta and hitting the central reservation at around 6.17pm.
Williams was breathalysed at the scene, but the test came back negative.
Recorder Eric Lamb told Williams that he had "strong personal mitigation" after committing the offence at a time of depression.
Andrew Madden, the CPS senior crown prosecutor, said: "Brandon Williams’ driving on that day clearly fell far below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver.
"Witnesses said Williams kept speeding up and then breaking sharply. It was clear he wasn’t in control of the vehicle.
"The driving was erratic and the speed was grossly excessive. Eventually, Williams lost control completely and crashed. It is a fortunate no one was seriously injured or killed."
The defender is currently without a club, after being released by Manchester United at the end of the 2023/24 season.
He spent that year on loan at Kieran Mckenna's Ipswich Town in the Championship, however the loan was cut short when Mckenna was made aware of Williams' personal issues.
Williams had previously discussed his personal issues on Ben Foster's 'Fozzcast' podcast: "I go into this mode where I just don't care. I have this switch where I don't care what happens.
"They [family and friends] wanted me to get back to football but they could see I'd fallen out of love with.
"It hurts me watching football now because I just want to be there, I just want to play. I miss being in a team, on the coach, travelling to games, having meals together and just doing things."
