Thomas Tuchel's men will kick off their campaign on Wednesday

Anthony Gordon is poised to start England's World Cup opener against Croatia, with Thomas Tuchel considering a tactical approach that could see Marcus Rashford deployed from the bench.

The England boss is putting the finishing touches to his plans ahead of Wednesday's crucial Group Stage clash and appears to be weighing up how best to use two of his most dangerous attacking players.

Rather than viewing Gordon and Rashford as rivals for a single position, Tuchel reportedly sees both as important weapons at different stages of a match.

Gordon's work rate, discipline and ability to maintain team structure are qualities highly valued by the German coach, according to the Daily Mail, particularly in the early stages of games when England are looking to establish control.

The winger's willingness to track back and maintain width has strengthened his case to start on the left flank.

Rashford, meanwhile, offers a different profile.

The forward's pace and ability to produce decisive moments in one-on-one situations make him an attractive option later in matches, especially against tiring opponents.

Should Gordon be selected from the start, it would not necessarily be viewed internally as a reflection on Rashford's standing within the squad.

Instead, Tuchel is believed to be encouraging players to view selection across the full 90 minutes, particularly given the significant impact substitutes can have in modern football.

Elsewhere, England's defence also appears to be taking shape.

Ezri Konsa is increasingly expected to partner John Stones in central defence despite Marc Guehi having entered the tournament as a strong contender for the role.

Konsa's physical presence, aerial ability and defensive reliability are said to appeal to Tuchel, while Stones' composure and passing range would provide balance alongside him.

One area of concern remains Bukayo Saka, however.

The Arsenal star has been managing an Achilles issue and is still working his way back towards full fitness.

Although Saka featured in a behind-closed-doors training fixture against Miami FC last week, he did not play the majority of the match.

The winger has yet to appear at his sharpest during England's preparations in North America and there are growing doubts over whether he is ready to start against Croatia.

As a result, Tuchel may opt to use him as an impact substitute while Arsenal teammate Noni Madueke takes up the right-wing role.

Another major selection decision centres around the No 10 position.

Jude Bellingham appears to have strengthened his claim after impressing during England's recent victory over Costa Rica.

The Real Madrid midfielder delivered an influential display and has generated growing confidence within the England camp ahead of the tournament opener.

There is an increasing sense that Bellingham has moved ahead of Morgan Rogers in the race for the attacking midfield berth behind captain Harry Kane.

Observers also noted Bellingham's prominent presence when England arrived in Kansas City over the weekend, with the midfielder among the first players off the team plane behind Kane.
