Diogo Dalot was a fortunate man on Saturday

There was controversy in the Manchester derby on Saturday, with Diogo Dalot receiving a yellow card - instead of a red - following a knee-high challenge on Jeremy Doku.

Dalot was attempting to get the ball when he caught Doku, with the City star falling to the turf in pain.

The United star only received a caution for his tackle, with his lack of force seemingly letting him off the hook.

VAR checked the incident, with referee Anthony Taylor's decision allowed to stand.

But many thought Dalot was fortunate to escape a dismissal, with the Portugal international's tackle proving to be an early talking point in the match.

"Not good. It is knee high. The ball is there and Jeremy Doku shifts it. Diogo Dalot is very late," said Gary Neville.

"He is clearly looking for the ball, but Doku is too quick for him."

On social media, others were equally as puzzled.

Sharing a clip of the incident, an X user stated: "HOW THE HELL ISNT THIS A RED CARD FOR DALOT?????"

A second said: "That is a horrendous tackle from Diogo Dalot. Could've been an idiotic moment, another day that is a red card."

"Very lucky. Should been red. If that had been a City player on one of ours I'd be fuming," were the words of a third user.

Another said: "How that is not a red is beyond me. He got away with one there."

And a fifth echoed those words by saying: "He's lucky to get away with that."

It has certainly been a chaotic start to the match.

United, managed by Michael Carrick for the first time since the 44-year-old was appointed as head coach earlier in the week, nearly went ahead inside two minutes.

Harry Maguire crashed a header against the bar from close range, with the England international restored to the team following his return from injury.

Tempers also flared up again in the early stages, too.

Luke Shaw was booked for a crunching tackle with United on the front foot.

And Maguire nearly squared up to Bernardo Silva as well.
