GB News looks at three things we learned from Chelsea's game against Crystal Palace

Chelsea's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace was far from a classic - ending in 0-0.

Neither Dean Henderson nor Robert Sanchez were really troubled in net, with both sides struggling to create significant chances.

Eberechi Eze stole the headlines before kick off, with the 27-year-old expected to complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the coming days.

Along with centre-back Marc Guehi, who is subject to interest from Liverpool, the midfielder started the game and was Palace's biggest threat.

And it was Crystal Palace who were the bigger winners on the day, as Chelsea stuttered out of the Premier League blocks.

With that being said, here are three things we learned from the game at Stamford Bridge.

VAR continues to cause problems

Another week, and another VAR complaint. This time it is from the Crystal Palace corner, as Eberechi Eze saw his thunderous free kick soar through the fingers of Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea net - only for it to be disallowed moments later.

The one credence that can be given to VAR and referee Darren England is the speed of the decision. Within a minute or two, rightly or wrongly, the decision was made.

But the question remains, and will always remain as long as VAR is a part of the game: at what point should VAR intervene?

Based on the rule, that attacking players cannot be within one meter of the defensive wall, Guehi’s position was probably illegal. Is that what VAR was brought in for?

Unfortunately, a spectacular book-ending moment for Eze has been taken away from him, and fans remain split whether the goal should have been disallowed anyway.

Estevao is going to light up the league

Sunday afternoon marked the first 40 minutes for teenage sensation Estevao in a Chelsea shirt, and he certainly made his mark.

While he couldn’t change the scoreline, the Brazilian looked bright, direct and fearless. The 18-year-old is incredibly light on his feet and breezes past defenders with ease.

Given his age, decisions and end product are bound to be a weakness. But the threat that this kid poses is extremely valuable, and he will undoubtedly cause defences problems.

He isn’t afraid to dive into challenges either, with the youngster picking up a yellow card after he dived into Daniel Munoz when Crystal Palace.

If Cole Palmer doesn't tick, Chelsea don't

Last season, Chelsea started magnificently, so did Palmer. They endured a mid-season slump, so did Palmer. They picked up towards the end of the season and performed when it mattered, so did Palmer.

So much of Chelsea's attacking prowess is reliant on the 23-year-old's performance. If he doesn't create, Chelsea don't and it's never good to rely on a player so much.

Cole Palmer is brilliant, but why do Chelsea struggle so much when he is quiet? Enzo Maresca's side have a wealth of options across the forward line, but today showed that without the glue of Palmer, nothing really sticks.

Chelsea changed wingers, they changed strikers, but still couldn't find the winning formula. This will be a problem if they want to mount a serious challenge for the league.
