GB News senior sports reporter Callum Vurley provides analysis on all the key moments on Chelsea's return to the Champions League

Chelsea suffered defeat on their first match in the Champions League since 2023 after losing 3-1 to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

A Harry Kane double, taking him to 10 goals for the season already, and an own goal from Trevoh Chalobah saw the German giants take all three points, despite a moment of magic from Cole Palmer.

Enzo Maresca, who was managing his first Champions League match as Chelsea boss, made some big calls ahead of kick-off including putting club captain Reece James in midfield and starting Enzo Fernandez in an attacking midfield position with Palmer on the flanks.

Chelsea started well and Fernandez had a golden chance to put the visitors ahead early on but moments later, a quick free-kick saw Michael Olise deliver a low cross that Chalobah inadvertently put into his own net.

In a whirlwind 10 minutes in the first half, Kane was fouled by Moises Caicedo in the box as the England international netted the resulting penalty with ease.

Almost straight from kick-off, Palmer dragged Chelsea up the pitch himself before scoring a sumptuous finish to reduce the deficit once more.

But that was as good as it got for the Blues as Kane went on to score his second after a defensive mishap from Malo Gusto after the break.

Chelsea thought they got one back when Palmer neatly tucked the ball past Manuel Neuer from an Estevao Willian pass, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

The Blues face Manchester United next at Old Trafford as they continue their travels away from London, with that Premier League fixture the third of four away games in a row.

But what did we learn on Wednesday night?

Chelsea's youthfulness proves their undoing

There is only so much talent and tactics can take you, experience goes a long way - especially in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich have bundles of it; they are one of the super clubs of Europe while some of their stars such as Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich have more appearances in the Champions League than most Chelsea players have senior appearances.

So despite Chelsea's strong start, one Bayern quick free-kick and it was all undone as a low ball from Michael Olise bamboozled the Blues backline and saw Chalobah score an own goal.

Moments later, experienced and cooler heads would have tried to keep a lid on the pace of the match. Not this youthful Chelsea team, though, who tried to get back in the game quickly, resulting in the ball getting lost, straight to Harry Kane, and a penalty conceded - albeit a soft one.

However, it did work to their favour as almost straight from kick-off, Palmer took the game by the scruff of the neck to slot a beautiful goal past Manuel Neuer.

Chelsea seem to play better against the big boys. When teams are not playing with a low block against them, they have the freedom to express themselves and they have the talent to do so.

Maresca's tactics on Wednesday night seemed to be the exact same that he used against Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final.

On that occasion, Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners but it was not so simple against Bayern, who are one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season.

With more big games to come for the Blues, including against Barcelona, Napoli and Benfica, it is very likely Maresca will continue this strategy.

Ultimately, Chelsea were beaten by the bigger fish but the manner of this defeat will rankle for the players and coach. Three huge errors gifted Bayern the win.

Simply put, at this level, you cannot make those kind of mistakes. Teams in the Champions League will punish you. Maresca will have to learn that quickly.

With the scores at 2-1 in the second half, Bayern took complete control of the match and Chelsea looked badly in need of reinforcements. Instead, Maresca hid in the dugout and Chelsea went 3-1 behind.

He did make some changes but it was too little too late, his pensiveness cost Chelsea at a time when a shrewder manager might have carved something out of tonight's fixture.

Like this squad, Maresca is young in manager years at 45, but that means little in this competition. If you harbour ambitions of winning the Champions League, you must fix up quickly.
