The Premier League giants were forced to take action

Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sell their women's football team to V Sports, with a stake in the operation going to prominent American investors.

The club has stated they face no issues with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules and are engaged in constructive dialogue with UEFA regarding financial fair play compliance.

The deal comes after Villa explored selling their women's side for approximately 18 months, according to the Athletic.

Villa recorded losses totalling £195 million over the past two years, raising concerns about potential PSR breaches.

The club's decision follows a similar path taken by Chelsea, who sold their women's team to parent company BlueCo for £200 million in June 2024.

V Sports serves as the parent company that owns Villa, having been established as NWSE before its rebrand in 2021.

The company is jointly controlled by American billionaire Wes Edens and Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, who also serves as Villa's chairman.

The investment vehicle's portfolio extends beyond Villa to include a 29 per cent stake in Portuguese club Vitoria S.C. and a 25 per cent stake in Spanish side Real Union.

V Sports has also established partnership agreements with Egyptian Premier League club ZED FC and Japan's Vissel Kobe of the J1 League.

This ownership structure means Villa's women's team will remain within the broader corporate umbrella whilst attracting new investment.

Chelsea's sale established a significant precedent for women's football valuations in England.

The Blues sold an eight per cent stake in their women's team to Alexis Ohanian, Reddit's founder and husband of tennis icon Serena Williams, in May.

This transaction valued Chelsea's women's team at approximately £245million. The stake sale followed the initial £200m transfer of the team to BlueCo, demonstrating substantial investor interest in women's football assets.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Villa's women's side, which finished sixth in the Women's Super League last season, has competed in England's top flight since the 2020-21 campaign.

The men's team matched this sixth-place finish in 2024-25, securing Europa League qualification for the upcoming season.

Villa reported a loss of £85.4 million for the 2023-24 season, following a £119.6m loss in 2022-23.

The club did turn a profit of £300,000 in 2021-22, but a combined loss exceeding £105 million over three seasons would typically constitute a PSR breach.

However, spending on infrastructure, youth development and women's football is exempt from PSR calculations.

This exemption provides crucial context for Villa's decision to restructure their women's team ownership.
