The Liverpool boss was left unimpressed with his side's performance

Liverpool took three points from Newcastle in a remarkable Monday night encounter on Tyneside, as boss Arne Slot fumed at his side's performance after the match.

It was a game that had everything. The first half saw Liverpool, who had been under intense pressure from Newcastle, storm into the lead after a stunning effort from distance from midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

The half ended with Anthony Gordon receiving his marching orders following a VAR review that left referee Simon Hooper with no choice but to produce a red card.

The second half started and compounded the misery for Newcastle, with Hugo Ekitike lashing the ball home with just 20 seconds being played.

Liverpool boss Slot missed the goal, with the Dutchman not having even come out from the tunnel for the second half by the time the ball had flown into the net

But Newcastle rallied and battered through Liverpool's midfield to dominate the game, with skipper Bruno Guimaraes nicking a goal to halve the deficit.

Youngster William Osula prodded home an equaliser from a free kick, and Newcastle completed an unlikely comeback.

But there was still time for one more piece of magic, as 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha slotted the ball home emphatically in the 100th minute to steal all three points back to Merseyside.

After the game, Slot described the moment as a "dream" for Ngumoha, but insisted he must remain grounded.

"It's a dream debut for him," Slot said after the game.

"I think that whole attack was quite good. I think Harvey [Elliott] started it or our right-hand side and [Dominik Szoboszlai] the dummy.

"It was a perfect attack. We stayed calm at the end to find the right solution to score the goal.

"I'm very pleased for Rio, I've said it to him already, it all starts now, he has to keep working hard and stay humble but definitely have to enjoy this because these nights, you can't take them for granted if you're in his position.

"I'm sure with the players we have, he will be back in training and having a hard session tomorrow again."

Slot continued, adding his disappointment to his side's performance: "I'm not too sure if I saw a football match today. It was set-piece after set-piece, long throw.

"It didn't have a lot to do with tactics, what I said before the game, but I liked a lot how we stood strong. Very difficult first half hour, 45 minutes, but we didn't collapse at all, we stood strong.

"Going down to 10-men, you would expect that that is a big plus for us, but when a goalkeeper takes every free kick, then there's not so much help if you are one player up, and that's why it was so difficult for us to bring the 2-0 over the line.

"We didn’t play well enough with the ball. Every time we got to the end phase of the attack, our attackers tried to force the ball. I don’t think there was so much advantage to be up a man because of the way they played.

"This is what makes the Premier League so special. I think every fan around the world enjoyed watching this game also because their fans were amazing in the help they gave their home team."
